  1. The Ancient Sumerian/Akkadian Text (of Human Origins)
Strictly speaking, the Enuma Elish is a later Akkadian text, although there probably existed an earlier Sumerian source (destroyed by Sargon or otherwise lost).

The Enuma Elish is very much of the Hermetic (“As Above So Below”) genre. The “god” sacrificed in order to create mankind was Kingu (proto-Uranus), who formed a “holy marriage” (or unholy depending on your orientation) with Tiamat (residual gas from the early solar system). The strange couple was mugged by Marduk, who stirred up the nine monsters (“plagues”) of Tiamat and then “parted the waters” before lopping off the “head” of Kingu, the “firstborn” of the gods (as in the 10th plague of the Moses story).

This resulted in the “birth” of our Earth (as well as Venus/”Athena from the head of Zeus”) and the “death” of Uranus, which now lays prone (on it’s “back”) in the outer solar system. In the Enuma Elish, Marduk is the hero rather than the victim. Although the deed also cost the Super-Planet Marduk his own life, he was honored posthumously with 72 names/titles and declared to be the greatest of the gods.

Other traditions made Marduk (“Re”) the villain and Kingu/Tiamat (“Osiris”) the hero. There were two sides, as with every story. Regardless of which side one takes, this extraordinary event was credited for the very special home that we now share. It was so extraordinary that the event was imprinted by our makers onto every aspect of ancient culture. The creation of our planet required a “sacrifice,” therefore the creation of modern man (to live on said planet) also required some type of token sacrifice.
