Rupert Sheldrake Survives Stabbing

“Maverick biologist” Rupert Sheldrake – known for his research supporting telepathy and ‘the sense of being stared at’ – was stabbed yesterday while delivering a presentation at the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness in Santa Fe. Initial reports suggest that his attacker, Japanese national Hirano Kazuki, attempted to stab Sheldrake in the chest, but tripped and slashed the researcher’s leg open instead:

Rupert Sheldrake of London was sitting up and alert as medics took him on a gurney to an ambulance outside Santa Fe’s historic hotel at the southeast corner of the Plaza. Asked if he was OK, Sheldrake smiled and responded, “I hope so.”

Hirano Kazuki, 33, of Yokohama, Japan, spent Wednesday night in jail after he was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and assault with intent to commit a violent felony. He provided no resistance as officers led him in handcuffs from the hotel.

Hirano had been attending the 10th International Conference on Science and Consciousness. Other attendees said he had been acting oddly. They said he confronted Sheldrake earlier this week, telling him he heard voices and saw demons. Another featured speaker at the conference told the man he was “full of negative energy” and counseled him to “calm down,” said Evan Mecham, an attendee from Broomfield, Colo.

There is also a video news report at KOAT Albuquerque – more information as I find out more. Sounds like a near miss for Rupert (who recently sent us this report about his run-in with Richard Dawkins), I’m very glad to hear he’s going to be okay. Certainly a disturbing development – most of us in this field have had our share of run-ins with ‘unbalanced’ folk over the years, but you never think things will go this far. Thanks Filip for the heads-up.

  1. Wow!
I’m so glad Mr. Sheldrake survided this horrible attack, and hopefully it won’t leave lasting side-effects that would change his life-style.

I can already see all the idiot remarks from the “sceptic” community: “why, wasn’t he able to foresee the attack beforehand?” or something stupid like that.

We live in a very crazy world 🙁

Holy cow Red….it’s like you’re….psychic!!! (I think we’re getting caught in a “bad psychic joke” vortex.

LOL, second post about it on the JREF forums, and you nailed it. Lamers.
      🙂

      Kind regards,
      Greg

  2. Updates?
Any update on Rupert’s condition? I know his injury is not life-threatening, but I’m still concerned. After losing John Mack a few years ago, we need all the brave souls who dare to pull back the curtain to stay on this side for a little while longer.

I hope the accused gets the help he needs as well, it sounds like a classic case of schizophrenia.

    1. Not the best news
Robert at Paranormalia is reporting (via a friend) the following:

I hear from a friend of his that the knife narrowly missed a main artery, that his leg swelled right up and an operation was needed to remove a large blood-clot – doctors say it may be a year before he can walk properly again.

So I think he’ll be okay, but sounds like it could be more than just a flesh wound.

And for anyone who wonders why the modern ‘skeptical’ movement are often regarded as obnoxious: Exhibit A.

      Kind regards,
      Greg

      1. Skeptic cult.
These kinds of ‘skeptic’ postings have the foul smell of cultist postings, reminescent of Cassiopaean type cults. All under the conviction that people have something to learn from them, although they have nothing new to say that could lead to advancement. Standing on a position does not advance anything and seeking to convince others is an attempt to prevent others from advancing, even if it is totally unconscious and mechanical as all attitudes are.

It goes to say that cult thinking is not the exclusive trademark of spiritualists and esoterists but is definitely ingraved in human thinking patterns, something the skeptics have not been able to escape, because like their nemesis they have not recognized what thoughts are and how they totally condition the ego into an ideology or another.

Giving them too much attention is like feeding the trolls.

      2. Exhibit A
I don’t wish violence on anyone, but I’d cross the road to have a word with some of the posters in the JREF thread you linked to, Greg. See how smug and tough they are when they have to deal with someone face to face instead of hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. I’d like to say what I really think of them, but I don’t want Greg to get another lawsuit popping up in his inbox. 😉

From certainty comes smugness; from smugness comes absolutism; from absolutism comes dehumanisation – and then the bonfires burn

          1. Right on.
            Right on as usual Anthony.

Although I’m not so certain, actually 😉

  3. good news
The good news is that he will live, and hopefully will not be permanently incapacitated. I don’t know this man personally, maybe he has unusual views, I don’t care.

But honestly, I find the attacks on other philosophical views disgusting.
