It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.

Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by scientists at Nasa and Pennsylvania State University that, while considered unlikely, they say could play out were humans and alien life to make contact at some point in the future.

Shawn Domagal-Goldman of Nasa's Planetary Science Division and his colleagues compiled a list of plausible outcomes that could unfold in the aftermath of a close encounter, to help humanity "prepare for actual contact".

In their report, Would Contact with Extraterrestrials Benefit or Harm Humanity? A Scenario Analysis, the researchers divide alien contacts into three broad categories: beneficial, neutral or harmful.

Beneficial encounters ranged from the mere detection of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), for example through the interception of alien broadcasts, to contact with cooperative organisms that help us advance our knowledge and solve global problems such as hunger, poverty and disease.

Another beneficial outcome the authors entertain sees humanity triumph over a more powerful alien aggressor, or even being saved by a second group of ETs. "In these scenarios, humanity benefits not only from the major moral victory of having defeated a daunting rival, but also from the opportunity to reverse-engineer ETI technology," the authors write.

Other kinds of close encounter may be less rewarding and leave much of human society feeling indifferent towards alien life. The extraterrestrials may be too different from us to communicate with usefully. They might invite humanity to join the "Galactic Club" only for the entry requirements to be too bureaucratic and tedious for humans to bother with. They could even become a nuisance, like the stranded, prawn-like creatures that are kept in a refugee camp in the 2009 South African movie, District 9, the report explains.

The most unappealing outcomes would arise if extraterrestrials caused harm to humanity, even if by accident. While aliens may arrive to eat, enslave or attack us, the report adds that people might also suffer from being physically crushed or by contracting diseases carried by the visitors. In especially unfortunate incidents, humanity could be wiped out when a more advanced civilisation accidentally unleashes an unfriendly artificial intelligence, or performs a catastrophic physics experiment that renders a portion of the galaxy uninhabitable.

To bolster humanity's chances of survival, the researchers call for caution in sending signals into space, and in particular warn against broadcasting information about our biological make-up, which could be used to manufacture weapons that target humans. Instead, any contact with ETs should be limited to mathematical discourse "until we have a better idea of the type of ETI we are dealing with."

The authors warn that extraterrestrials may be wary of civilisations that expand very rapidly, as these may be prone to destroy other life as they grow, just as humans have pushed species to extinction on Earth. In the most extreme scenario, aliens might choose to destroy humanity to protect other civilisations.

"A preemptive strike would be particularly likely in the early phases of our expansion because a civilisation may become increasingly difficult to destroy as it continues to expand. Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilisational expansion could be detected by an ETI because our expansion is changing the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, via greenhouse gas emissions," the report states.

"Green" aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. "These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets," the authors write.

Even if we never make contact with extraterrestrials, the report argues that considering the potential scenarios may help to plot the future path of human civilisation, avoid collapse and achieve long-term survival.

1143 MAIN ROAD. ALSO HAD AN APPOINTMENT AT 8:45 P.M. IN THE AREA.

WHILE DRIVING ON 195 EAST & BEING A UFO ENTHUSIAST, I AUTOMATICALLY SCAN THE SKY SEARCHING FOR THE BRIGHTEST STARS. I SPOTTED TWO THAT WERE UNUSUALLY BRIGHT AND CONCENTRATED ON THEM FOR A WHILE. ONE OF THE STARS WAS LOCATED ABOVE THE FALL RIVER AREA & THE OTHER IN NORTH TIVERTON ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE EXPRESSWAY OR IN RELATION TO THE BRAGA BRIDGE ON THE RIGHT. ALL OF A SUDDEN, AS I WAS PASSING THROUGH SOMERSET, THE STAR SPURTED DIRECTLY OVER TO THE NORTHERN SECTION OF FALL RIVER WITH ACCELERATION FASTER THAN ANY JET IV'E EVER SEEN. NEXT I THOUGHT MAYBE I AM HALLUCINATING. TO MYSELF, I INDICATED, IF THE OBJECT SHOOTS BACK ACROSS THE HIGHWAY AGAIN ITS GOT TO BE A UFO! SURE ENOUGH TWO OR THREE SECONDS LATER IT WENT TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE. I WAS ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMED!

THEN I NOTICED THE SPACECRAFT, GLOWING LIKE A STAR, CONTINUE IN A NORTH EAST DIRECTION OVER THE BRAGA BRIDGE. I PREPARED TO EXIT 14S HEADING FOR TIVERTON ON ROUTE 24, LOOKED UP AND COULD SEE THE UFO ON MY LEFT HEADING FOR TIVERTON. THEN I NOTICED IT CROSS OVER ROUTE 24 TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY ON MY RIGHT, IT SEEM TO HOVER THERE FOR A SHORT TIME. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES I COULD SEE THE CRAFT ON MY LEFT JUST BEFORE EXITING ROUTE 24 AND ON TO ROUTE 138 MAIN ROAD.

UPON ENTERING THE PARKING LOT AT THE COACHMAN I DECIDED TO PARK AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO THE ENTRACE DUE TO THE EXTREMELY INCLEMENT WEATHER. I PARKED ABOUT 25 FEET FROM THE ENTRANCE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE RESTAURANT.

I OPENED THE DOOR, LOOKED AT MY WATCH WHICH INDICATED 6:20 P.M. STEPT OUT AND LOOKED UP-TO MY ASTONISHMENT THERE BEFORE MY EYES AT A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 150 FEET IN THE SKY WAS THIS MAGNIFICENT GLOWING WHITE OVAL SHAPED OBJECT BRIGHTER THAN A FLUORESCENT LIGHT, IT HOVERED WITHOUT MOVING OR MAKING A SOUND.

I HAD THIS TREMENDOUS FEELING OF BEING AT PEACE WITH MYSELF FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON.

A COUPLE OF MINUTES LATER MY GUEST DROVE INTO THE PARKING LOT. I RAN TO HER DOOR, OPENED IT AND TOLD HER TO LOOK UP AND SHE SAID, WHAT A BRIGHT STAR! I SAID, THIS IS A UFO. WE WATCHED FOR ANOTHER MINUTE BUT BECAUSE IT WAS SO COLD OUTSIDE WE RAN TO THE ENTRANCE.

A few months ago, an Australian newspaper business sent in a Freedom of Information Act request to view the country's government files on UFOs. The Australian Department of Defense responded that almost all its files on the topic had vanished, stirring discussion of conspiracy. A journalistic inquiry into the Australian government's public documents dealing with unidentified flying objects has resulted in the discovery that every file accept one has gone missing. A Fairfax newspaper, Sydney Morning Herald, states that Fairfax Media submitted an FOIA application for all documents linked to UFO experiences to the Australian Department of Defense. Fairfax is the owner of many newspapers and magazines in New Zealand and the U.S. UFOs in the land down under are tracked by the Royal Australian Air Force. However, the RAAF could only locate one complete file; it was from the 1950s.

It is a mystery

There was a file that was still left. It was called "Report on UFOs/Strange Occurrences and Phenomenon in Woomera." According to MSNBC, Woomera is used for weapons testing range. It is very remote. There are some small towns in the nearby vicinity. In 2000, the Australian Defense Force no longer accepted reports on UFOs. This was because they were considered a waste. The RAAF stopped investigation of UFO sightings in 1996. Sometimes the Australian government destroys records as part of "housekeeping" efforts. The UFO files were not a part of this, according to the Telegraph. Bill Chalker wrote a book about Australian UFO sightings. He said that to conserve space, eight years of UFO documents were ruined in 2003. Conspiracy theorists are abuzz concerning the news.

Australia is different

Australia is breaking with tradition among other core nations, as other nations have made their "X-Files" freely available online. The "British X-Files" have been released periodically by the British government in the National Archives. This has been occurring since 2008. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation states that the Royal New Zealand Air Force released all of its UFO documents at the end of 2010, while some remained sealed. In 2009, Canada made all of its UFO information public knowledge. They can all be found at the Library and Archives of Canada website. The Unidentified Flying Object information is accessible in the U.S. through several agencies, although it may take some work to get.
