Office Witchcraft: Addendum

In a serendipitous continuity of my last post, today the newspapers reported an event that I'd like to share with you. I think you'll find it rather amusing:

From today's edition of La Jornada [pardon the clumsy translation, text in brackets is of my own editing]

Witch Swindles Treasurer of the Quintana Roo Congress; takes $440 Thousand

Cancún, Quintana Roo, March 17th. The state Congress Treasurer, Lucía Sánchez Méndez, handed 440,000 pesos (approx. 33,850 US$) from the public funds to a witch who offered to perform a limpia [magical cleansing ritual] to the money, so that it would 'double' [in quantity].

The state Attorney, Bello Melchor Rodríguez Carrillo, announced that an apprehension order would be emitted against the government official, on the charge of 'abuse of trust'.

Rodríguez Carrillo said Sánchez Méndez acknowledged she used the payroll monies destined for the local Congress employees, so that the witch could perform the limpia. The woman had promised the Treasurer to double the quantity of the cash handed to her, and so she complied —but that was the last time she saw [the witch].

The attorney added that the abuse of trust is sanctioned in the state with up to 15 years of prison. However, Lucía Sánchez —sister of the Municipal Police Director, Luis Germán Sánchez Méndez [Mexican Nepotism 101 my friends!]— may return the money to the local Congress and plea for a pardon.

The head officer of the Legislative Power, Sergio de la Cruz Osorno, filed the report [against Sánchez Méndez] when he detected the missing money.

Sánchez Méndez abandoned her position last Friday, and she could be fired, although that won't stop the penal process against her. "We have given notice of the appeal, and the Human Resources Direction will apply the pertinent sanction", said the president of the Congress Grand Commission, Luis González Flores.

The lawmaker added that the public official had cashed some checks on her own, a transaction usually carried out by a reserve funds company.

As you can see, my boss is in good company ;)

1) I would like to hear an explanation of exactly how the money was supposed to double. This defies simple common sense. You hand a witch $30 grand and she hands you back $60 grand? The extra money has to come from somewhere. The bills are not doubloons, they have to have official serial numbers. Then there is the incredible delivery of state funds to someone who just walks out the door with them? You don't insist on being present or at least check out the witch first?

2) From a professional standpoint, the witch really missed the boat with this con as well. You have an opening like this and you don't bring in a counterfeiter? If you handed the treasurer back $60,000 fake, there's no telling how much you could walk out the door with on a second pass!!

Indeed, the article is rather sparse on the details of what exactly the witch was intended to do to the money. Was it a symbolic blessing of some sort? Or did this Treasurer actually believe the quantity of the paper notes with double in quantity.

Even funnier would have been if the petitioner had gotten back in returned scanned images of the notes with a 2X magnification :-P

I guess if one did some research, you would find that 60% of all magical-related stuff are destined to grant more $$, another 30% would be focusing on love, and the rest in miscellaneous stuff —getting even with some foe, increase the size of your junk (what, you think that started with the Internet??).

Once again, I reiterate that I'm fairly skeptical with magic intended to grant material wealth of any kind. And also, even if magic could work, that doesn't mean any person claiming to have those abilities are the real deal, even if they follow the rituals to the letter —anyone can pick a guitar, but there's only one Jack White, man.

The putative witch would have a real gold mine there.

Place ad.

Force rubes through "ritual" involving nudity and possibly farm animals.

Take plenty of compromising photos.

Blackmail away!

You can charge upfront AND cleanup on the backside. Who wants photos of their small junk out there, let alone pics suggestive of bestiality, adultery, or sex with ugly or elderly women (there's another potential revenue stream! "I can get you a date.").

Many thanks for the laughs, E.P.
