My Weird Events

RPJ asked me if I would be willing to describe my own paranormal experiences here at some point so I thought I would give it a go for her. These are the main ones, I get a bit concerned that I have forgotten a lot of my life. I don’t tend to be the sort of person to talk about it very often and I prefer talking about things and trying to understand things above recanting my history. I have probably forgotten a lot so these are the highlights really. There is absolutely no embellishment or fiction here.

My life theories work around a principle that most people’s lives are full of events like this, that I am in no way different. It always makes me chuckle when someone comments that it is perhaps that naturalists have their mind closed to supernatural events and this is the reason they don’t experience them, as if we are not members of some sort of exclusive club, like our humanity is in some way diminished by trying to explain things naturally. I don’t think this is possible. Spirituality is about spirit to me and nothing can change your spirit, no matter what belief system you adopt. Spirit has been described in many ways by deists, theists, pantheists, agnostics and atheists. None seem to differ very much at the emotional core of it; we keep our humanity and make of it what we will (though they can vary enormously in their respective life politics). They just think that other people differ. In one way I think when we start getting angry that other peoples interpretations differ, or the evidence that people choose differs, then we are displaying defensive, limbic, and addictive traits, like we are going to have our rattle taken away. One reason I am subjecting myself to ideas from astrology, numerology, transcendence, anything I can find that challenges my own composition is because I’m suspicious that the addictive trait can be broken and might lead to emotional harmony in a world of turbulent narrative. In a memetic sense I want my mind back please from this landscape of ideas that would abuse it as a lair for their own benefit.

Firstly the paranormal events that have occurred in my family, just to jog my memory:

There is a story of a ghost in our family home when I was a child, a woman who would stand in corners or over the beds watching. My brother saw her one day leaning over him. He was very young at the time, about 6 I think. We didn’t know about the story at the time though.
My sister had an event at a spiritualist the other week and spoke to a dead friend who came through.
My Mum was contacted by, lets call it an angel, when she was having a bad time in her life and told her that she would meet someone important that night and not to worry. She met my father.
Her and another relative had an experience of the visit of my deceased great grandmother and both strongly smelt her favourite flowers along with a sense of her presence.
My mother describes an experience where she came out of the bathroom and reached out to turn the light off, which was of the pull chord type. Before she could reach it the chord snapped down and bounced up hitting the ceiling.
My cousin came back into the lounge area of my grandmother’s farmhouse and said she had been talking to the girl on the stairs, except there was none. Other children have said the same thing. Apparently it was not uncommon to hear footsteps upstairs when no-one was up there.

My Godmother had an out of body experience while using drugs and floated above her body and her guests at the party.
My Mum played with a Ouija board with friends for fun when she was young and had the glass fly across the room and smash against the wall. I tried when I was young and it didn’t do anything, then again it was on a piece of paper on grass, but then again it was in a graveyard.

I’m not really doing this section much justice, I’m sure there are many more if I could remember them.

And now myself

Plenty of Deja-Vu experiences, but one noticeable one that differs from the normal sensation of ‘I’ve seen this before’ was a dream where I woke up vividly remembering every detail of the scene, I remembered the bridge and how the sun lit it and cast shadows on the bank next to it, and the white flowers growing on the grass. The brunette middle aged woman pushing her red push chair and the way the sun caught it as she came out from under the bridge. Then it happened several hours later on a walk with my parents. It was quite a sensation. I think I was about 12-13 years old when that happened.

In a similar vein to my Mums experience I went to turn out my bedroom light which had a short pull chord and it turned off just as I was about to touch it. I thought the bulb had blown so I pulled the chord to test, but it came back on. I think this happened another time as well, either that or the bulb blew at the exact moment I went to pull the chord, I cant remember which.

I was bored in an exam once having finished early and was staring at the clock watching each second pass for minutes at a time. It got to the point where it felt like I could make the clock shake by concentrating on it. The light reflecting on the clock would shimmer as if the clock was shaking each time I tried and stopped each time I stopped trying.

On lots of occasions I have heard my name called out. It became a joke between me and my best friend at one point as I would stop whenever it happened to see who was calling my name, but no-one was there. Then id have to go ‘just heard my name again’ and we’d laugh.

On occasion I’ve heard music playing. Sometimes very quietly and sometimes like its filling my mind. Strangely I can’t tell you any details about the music, I can hear it at the time, but not describe it afterwards; it’s like a dream in that way as the memory of it quickly fades. It’s more classical than rock or metal though! I don’t listen to classical though, except an appreciation of the absolute classics, Ode to Joy, Orff etc. I’m a blues and rock guy myself.

I have the ability, almost on command if I’m relaxed and concentrating, to start music playing in my mind though. Once it starts so long as I don’t think about much else the music will keep playing and I can hear whole songs, typically just instrumentally, with all parts of the music playing. I can hear several instruments at once though the main instrument will stand out most, along with the percussion. I like this when it happens. Frustratingly though more often than not it will just be whole sections repeated over and over, but the clarity is fantastic and each note is there and I hear it loud and clear. I don’t know if this relates to hearing other music in my head, but I would guess it does.

I was staying over at a friend’s in my mid teens and we were telling each other ghost stories and trying to scare each other, then one of us suggested trying to read the others mind. I tried to read his. We closed our eyes and he thought about an object and I tried to guess it. At first I saw an image of an owl, but that changed to a woman sitting down with her legs crossed. He asked me what I saw and I laughed and said ‘nothing’, for some reason oddly embarrassed that I would get it wrong! He asked again so I said an owl and he said ‘nope’. I guess from my silence he could tell I was thinking something and it was bugging me that I’d said the owl as the image of the sitting woman had been stronger in my mind, the owl was only fleeting and morphed into the sitting woman, so I felt that I should have said that. I told him that I had seen a woman sitting down on the floor with her legs crossed. That had been their drawing assignment in art class that day so that is what he had been thinking of.

I have now had several instances of lying in bed and being pinned down unable to move. The first scared the hell out of me. Like a kid I couldn’t sleep on my own that night and had to go through and sleep on someone else’s floor, I was 22. For the next several days the room felt cold and as if someone else was in it with me, so I slept badly then as well. The last of these attacks happened about 4 weeks ago. I read in a book by Derek Acorah, a UK medium, about your 3rd eye. I’m not one of Derek’s biggest fans, but I know what he means by your psychic eye or minds eye or third eye. I can sense in myself the difference between my mental states where I feel like people are watching me or someone else is in a room with me and how to turn it off and having read that I use it when I have one of my night attacks. It can’t be used to stop the attack in the middle, though if I remember I might try harder- I’m usually a bit preoccupied at the time, but it can be used to feel more comfortable afterwards and stop the room feeling sinister afterwards; to some effect anyway, I’m still likely to feel a bit uncomfortable in the room for a few days afterwards, but not as bad as it could be.

Some rooms really don’t feel very comfortable to be in. I have only had this experience a few times with a few rooms, but once I’ve felt it once with a room I will always feel it, I can’t shut it off. It’s just a very ominous feeling, like I have to get out of there right away.

If I concentrate on my hands and especially the ends of my fingers I can make them tingle. It’s more of a tingling than a hot sensation. It takes about a third of a second to do it and can be difficult to stop them tingling after I’ve started them, perhaps like giving yourself hiccups. My Mum has a rare brain disorder and once in one of those strange moments where you try something just to see what it would do I gave her a neck massage while making my fingers tingle. She had been about to give up on going for a walk as she was in too much pain and discomfort and even though massages don’t usually help very much she felt good afterwards and said she hadn’t known a 1 minute massage to have that sort of affect before. Her condition is not muscular, but it to do with the brain, brain stem and pressure across the brain.

I had an utterly unexplainable event happen playing pool. Even now me and my friend laugh about it. I definitely can’t explain it and its fully corroborated by him. I was taking a shot and told him I was going to miracle it. It’s like with that 3rd eye thing, except in reverse. I can open that feeling and sort of be filled by good emotions, as if my chest is full. I did that then took the pool shot. The white ball rolled quickly about 3 feet then jumped over his ball and went on to strike my ball. The strange thing is even though I didn’t know what I intended to happen when I told him it was going to ‘miracle the ball’ I did intend it to hit the one it did.

There are probably lots of others that I’ve forgotten, but I’ll add them if I remember.

All this means I’m not adverse to abnormal happenings :)

Thanks you for sharing those experiences with us - and I'm very pleased you joined us here at TDG.

I'm a bit concerned about your night-ghost attacks as it sounds as if an unpleasant entity is invading your room. If you can get some sage incense and burn it in there it may help to clear things, or try demanding that the presence leaves and does not return (don't ask, demand). A clear quartz crystal placed in each corner wouldn't hurt either. Imagine your room filled with silvery-white light, floor to ceiling and wall to wall, and keep checking to make sure it's still there. All symbolic stuff, I know, but symbols are often more effective than words.

Please let us know if the attacks continue, as others here may have more helpful ideas than I have.

Best wishes, Kathrinn

Yeah, from some spiritual perspectives these 'ghost attack' experiences can be interpreted as being something nasty; as you say, an unpleasant entity.

The scientific explanation is a bit nicer. It is along the lines of: Along with most animals we have evolved systems to keep us immobile during sleep. When you wake up your brain is supposed to return movement to you prior to you waking up, but sometimes this goes wrong and you wake up paralysed. It only lasts for a short time though until all your brain is 'awake'.

You could test for the scientific one, but the chances of getting someone in an MRI machine as it was happening are next to nill i guess unless you can find someone who has it as a full blown disorder. Anyway...

It has happened all over the country so if its an entity it is following me, or if its multiple ones then i guess i'd just be open to them in some way.

When we had our previous chats about the placebo effect and we talked about how powerful it is and how it is unknown; i think this is one of those moments. Rather than quartz and incense actually having an effect on negative entities i would fall down the line of them having an effect on the individuals state of conscious receptivity to these types of events.

If the scientific answer is the correct one and it's biological then there may be little i can do to stop it happening, but either way i can change my experience of it.

If it is an entity then the effect of belief might help control the state of consciousness and change the experience for myself and the entity.

Unfortunately placebo effects, or belief effects (for want of better terminology) differ per person. Crystals and incense dont create a protective effect in my mind so wouldnt help. Interestingly though when i was a kid i made a device from a battery, a big cool switch and an led and that functioned as my ghost detector/shield, and by making me feel safe it kept the feeling that i was being watched away.

Imagining a sort of sci-fi shield around either me or my house has been a trick of mine for probably more than 10 years and has helped on more spooky nights.

Funnily enough i also found that imagining a white light shooting into my chest and filling me made me feel better so i have been doing that for years as well.

To me these are placebo devices, but that does not undermine their power to me and as we have agreed, the word placebo shouldn't get quite the bad rap that it does. It certainly doesn't mean that nothing is happening.

The biggest protective device i have found so far though was the realisation that if these entities are real then it becomes pretty good evidence we have a soul. If they are a bad disembodied soul and i have a soul then we are much more equal than some belief systems would present. I.e if they want to attack me then i can defend myself - soul vs soul. More than this though, i have a soul and a body, something they lack. This gives me power and in my mind i become more powerful than them, and since belief is power ;) They can sneak up on me no problems, but i am able to defeat them as it were. It can be as simple as not fearing them during the attack and laughing at them, then summoning positive feelings and slapping them back with them. A battle of wills if you like, which i always win. I am getting stronger at this each time it happens; there is less fear and more ability to remain calm and in possession of my ability to summon the emotions i want to feel.

This is my best way of fighting discomfort caused by these events and it works to control my feeling during and after them. If the scientific idea is right then it works to help me feel better and if i'm under attack by naughty ghosts or negative energy then i'm getting better at winning. Either way its fear that lets the negative feelings win, so i start by beating that during and after the event :)

Sorry to disappoint, but I'm a Mexican dude, you know.

If my comments made you think that I'm as intelligent as a woman, then I'll take that as a big compliment ;-)

I don’t think this is possible.

I once wrote that people like Richard Dawkins are God-deaf, meaning like the same way some people are tone-deaf or color-blind, there might be some people who don't have a natural ability to perceive some of the more subtler things in life that others can. In opposition, there could be people who were born with a higher sensitivity for what we might call 'the hidden veil'.

I of course could be wrong.

And I admit that the problem comes when trying to interpret these weird events, and force them to fit into a coherent epistemological structure.

PS: After reading the entirety of your posting,it kind of amazes me that I have experienced some of the things you write about.

Sometimes, in the middle of the night, i clearly hear a male voice saying 'Hola' (Hello). It could be the neighbor in the house next to mine speaking over the phone, but why so late? and why can I hear it so clearly across a foot of concrete?

LOL I do that every time, specially when I'm at the shower. It's the poor man's Ipod :) The problem is when I'm concentrating on a difficult Classical music piece. Say Spring of Vivaldi's 4 Seasons. Sometimes I screw up the tyming of the violins, or I don't include all of the instruments.

I've sometimes felt sleep paralysis too. I don't really feel a presence in the room, but I do feel an awful fear and anxiety, like someone is going to come in—at that moment I admit it, I think 'aliens'— and I desperately try to reach for the night lamp switch, but it's like my hand takes forever to get there and turn it :(

I can do that too! Only I had never thought of using that to give someone a massage. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime ;-)

Some of the other weird things I experience is when I'm working out at the gym, running. I'm using my Ipod and I've made a songlist that it's intended to be very energetic. So whenever I'm running and hearing a song I really like and feels 'right' at that time, I try to have a sensation of energy exploding, coming from the base of my skull and running through my spine. That's how I get 'charged' and itreally helps to get an extra-boost in my workout—otherwise I would just collapse, since I'm not really physically fit ;-)

And there are also the weird 'visions' I experience whenever I have my eyes closed. Like currents of whitish energy swirling from a vortex. It's kind of weird, and I don't experience any particular feeling or sensation. I have never used drugs in my life, so I wonder if this is due to an excess of DMT produced by my brain. I can sometimes produce this 'visions' at will whenever I press my eye globes with my fingers (with the eyes closed of course); it's not the usual 'stars' effects commonly descried, but something more complex and evolving. and soemtimes they happen spontaneously while I'm lying on bed.
