Eureka...The Virtual Universe

My "eureka" happened one night in a printing lab where I was shooting some halftones with the process camera. It was 1963. If you've ever read a newspaper, you are familiar with those little dots that vary in sizes to convey the illusion of grey tones in photographic images. I noticed that when two or three negatives passed over each other while shuffling them, that a strange imagery was formed called a "moiré pattern." I had noticed this characteristic in some Op (optical) Art at the University of Texas where a large art show was on display. You probably remember the wavy-line stuff that was always bright and vibrational. As I contemplated the wreathing patterns, my mind flex-jumped to the broadcast of millions of wavelengths that would also do the same within the electromagnetic spectrum. I thought on it for a long time, in fact I have not stopped. What I began to build in my mind was a concept I called the "Moiré-Matrix" others call it the Holographic Universe...the concept represents a new paradigm in perception.

I wrote, did paintings, drew models, talked to my friends about the moiré-matrix until I was blue in the face...no one understood. In the seventies I received a hologram in an annual science yearbook, which came with my encyclopedias. I was in awe that the wavy lines were just like my moiré matrices. More study. I read every book I could find on how holography works and how such a reality could manifest into a God or Physics-created model of the Universe. Holograms were popping up everywhere; on the cover of National Geographic, at CBS as a holographic Dan Rather, on credit cards, you name the format -- it had been there.

For those who do not know, the holographic concept was built upon the model of Dennis Gabor's principles of holography (1947). He won a Nobel Prize for a process that today can split a single laser light into two separate beams. One beam reflects off an object. A second reference beam then rejoins the other in an interface of colliding wave patterns to form an interference image on film or plate. The resulting image then is reconstituted by a light as a three-dimensional image. Imagine what light from the Absolute could constitute. If the hologram is fragmented, each piece still produces its own unique image of the original whole object... much like a new geometry called Fractals is able to do.

Mandelbrot -- Fractals

Benoit Mandelbrot, an IBM fellow, and rediscoverer of FRACTALS, now brings to the world a new geometry that could allow us to construct holographic configurations by the numbers so-to-speak, thus giving us the ability to emulate the universes building blocks on a mathematical and visual level. Mandelbrot defends his new development thusly: "Why is geometry often described as cold and dry? One reason lies in its inability to describe the shape of a cloud, a mountain, a coastline, or a tree. Clouds are not spheres, mountains are not cones, coastlines are not circles, and bark is not smooth, nor does lightning travel in a straight line... ...Nature exhibits not simply a higher degree but an altogether different level of complexity. The number of distinct scales of length of patterns is for all purposes infinite...the existence of these patterns challenges us to study those forms that Euclid leaves aside as being formless, to investigate the morphology of the amorphous. Mathematicians have disdained this challenge, however, and have increasingly chosen to flee from nature by devising theories unrelated to anything we can see or feel."

Holography, chaos dynamics and fractalism have now become the focus of the "new-wave" scientific community as models for EVERYTHING, including our minds. It is being considered as a new paradigm (a systemic matrix of study). This remarkable new concept as chronicled in Michael Talbot's book entitled, THE HOLOGRAPHIC UNIVERSE (1991). His views deserve much attention and study for it amplifies our mental maps on being. Within its pages Talbot wraps his thesis in the discoveries of aforementioned notable physicist David Bohm, and neurophysiologist Karl Pribram plus a whole host of other respected scholars and scientists. The power that Talbot’s and others new-mindedness is developing within the manifest plane of existence at this time is pushing knowledge and wisdom to new and higher vistas. It is an example of movement and feedback that are impacting the realm of the human intellectual utility (field of being) that gives us this new view on our very being. The secret of its impetus is wrapped up in the essence of LEVERAGING (power concepts derived of dimensionally manipulated movement) on a universal scale.

The ancients stated "know thy self"...so to know one's self is to understand the differences each one of us has to leverage the world of appearances, for power and control over our environments. Each one of us has something a little different to offer. We come to the Universal table with many talents. Some call this arrival on the scene, the holographic-manifestation concept; the ancients had one other bromide of wisdom in the symbolic form of the "philosopher's stone." It was many faceted, composed of different views and dimensions of the manifest continuum, just as the fragmented hologram. Each part was lens-like and offered a massive view on life...just like that wonderful many faceted lens we call the mind, which gives us our perceptions on being. Collectively, we can perceive the totality of the Universe.

In Marilyn Ferguson's very successful work, AQUARIAN CONSPIRACY, the notion of a holographic mind in humans was introduced by Karl Pribram (mentioned above), then a Stanford neuro-scientist, who believed that the human brain might somehow be a reflection of a holographically manifest universe. He stated,” If the brain indeed knows by putting together holograms (dimensional event-sequences) by mathematically transforming frequencies from the electromagnetic spectrum, and elsewhere (the en-light of the mind), then who in the brain or with the brain is interpreting the holograms?" It occurred to Pribram that the brain might focus reality in a lens-like way. But, what programme or source of the data, is responsible for its reconstituting into reality? One wonders, is it this enigmatic and elusive thing called mind found on our level of manifestation and perhaps the cosmic level as well, that is experiencing this vast Virtual Reality we call Being?

The brain's neural interference patterns, its gestalt-mathematical processing, may be identical to the primary state of the universe. That is to say, our mental processes are, in effect, made of the same harmonic organizing principle. Cohesive-coalescence may be the domain of consciousness. It is said that Einstein professed mystical awe in the face of this concept of universal harmony. Standing on the shoulders of Einstein, this writer agrees -- the view is beyond phenomenal. Astronomer James Jeans has said that the universe is more like a great thought than a great machine, which Newton posited. And, astronomer Arthur Eddington said, "The stuff of the universe is mind-stuff." More recently, cyberneticist, David Foster described: "An intelligent universe whose apparent concreteness is generated by...in effect, cosmic data from an unknowable source. David Bohm called it the "generative order."

In a nutshell, the holographic super-theory says that our brain mathematically constructs hard reality from a quantum or cosmic dimension transcending time and space. The brain may be a biological-holographic configuration interpreting a holographic continuum. Remember the old saying, "as above, so below." Some believe we can find all the answers below, in the depths of our own being. We are reflective entities occupying broadcasted forms in a matrix (arena) beyond any one beings capability to understand...but we will try!
