New Grail Incarnation

Like Dr Who regenerating for the umpteenth time, the Daily Grail has once again undergone a facelift (and also has had some serious tinkering behind the scenes). Hopefully this is our Tom Baker incarnation (jelly baby?). Don’t panic too much, things aren’t really that different. A short guide:

  • Yes, we have a new logo. Original gangsters can feel free to take it out on a voodoo doll of myself. The logo will periodically cycle with different Grail-related background images to keep things fresh. Thanks are due to Ross Andrews for the oh-so-cool looking DG “icon” at the center of the logo, and the “fractal spiral” logo design is courtesy of Larry Jackson (original work “Spiral of the Sea“). Thanks also to all the others who sent in designs and ideas, your generosity is most appreciated. Huge thanks as always to our friend Mark James Foster for his designs and suggestions.
  • We now will be hosting embedded video content on Grail topics – however, to stop the news page from being clogged up, I have created a separate page listing them, as well as the TDG video box on the right side of the front page only to showcase the latest video (with a handy ‘more’ link at the bottom linking to the full page). If you are on dial-up and don’t wish to see this box at all, you can remove it via your account settings (providing you are a member).
  • I would like to do more features on TDG as well, and as such I have also created a ‘Features’ box which highlights them a little better than the old site. Again, the more link takes you to a full list.
  • For those on 800 x 600 monitors, yes the new layout is a bit wide. Buy a new monitor, it’s 2007 for crying out loud. Okay, seriously – if that’s not an option, you can switch to the ‘newgrail_800’ theme via your account settings (again for members). Those who don’t like change can also…errr…change to the old ‘TDG’ theme which looks almost the same as the old site. And for those that despise the black background, we also threw in a whitish theme called ‘Garland’. Hopefully we’ll get time to come up with a few more designs in future.
  • The left hand column of the old TDG is now to the right of the main content – I think this helps with readability, and intuitive navigation. The far right column is designed for feeds – from blogs here on TDG (slight redesign on how they are presented too), to RSS from other sites. Again, members can pick and choose which blocks they want to see via their account settings.
  • Creating new blogs, or adding comments should be much the same process as you are used to, the interfaces haven’t been changed (apart from colour tweaks).
  • Update: There is now also a widescreen theme available (1200 pixel width) – in your account settings, select newgrail_wide.

If you have a question, comment or suggestions, feel free to leave a message here on this story, or email me via ‘userhelp’ here at dailygrail.com (if the spambots can figure it out, you can). Hope you enjoy the new look TDG!

  1. love it!
I’d just like to be the first (?) to say I love the new look! Keep up the great work, and thanks for making such an interesting site 🙂

  2. Sleep is for the weak
Before I use the keyboard as a pillow, I’d like to say I love the new design. My only quibble is I’d prefer the most excellent Sub Rosa to be a little more prominent up the top, but that’s no biggie. Otherwise, a first-class design job, I’m … ZzZzZzZzsnrkZzZzZmumblemumbleZzZzZ

  3. New look Daily Grail
Congratulation Greg, a very fine update which retains the feel of the old, but fits my widescreen beautiflly!

And thanks to the regulars for all the inputs and links, still very much appreciated by this old-timer.

  4. great layout but not suited for all
The overall site layout is great and very practical.

Unfortunately the style sheets are not as flexible as the orginal design. My screen is 1280 (as are many current LCD screens) The 1024 layout wastes quite a bit of space along the edges which means everything is now more lines and you must scroll down further. – the old design used the whole screen width.

But its no big deal, I can simply use the old layout

    1. Bigger
      Hi Shade,

Part of my problem with the old theme was that there was very little space…it looked quite cluttered. However, it shouldn’t be hard for me to create a theme variation to suit 1280 – bare with me for a few days and I’ll have something for you (and others). I use 1280 btw, but prefer this layout to filling the screen.

There are also some problems with the 800 theme, which I’m workign on. There may need to be some changes on that one (such as dropping the video and features blocks).

Thanks to all for the positive comments, it feels good after so much work to see it appreciated. I’d have to say, this has by far been the most positive response to a changeover that we’ve done!
      🙂

      Kind regards,
      Greg

      1. Wide version
There is now a wide version (1200 px) of the new theme, for those members that want it. Head to your account settings and select newgrail_wide.

        Kind regards,
        Greg

  5. in car nation
    Hello Greg,

First impression, it looks great, however i don’t know if i can set this, but the rightside boxes get on my right eye nerves already, im used to having navigation on the left.

    A matter of choice;
Intimidation, corruption and lies, or serenity, sharing and sincerity.

  6. Mmmmm …. white background …
Ahhhh … like fresh fallen snow (of which we currently have lots) bounded by crystal blue columns of persuasion, all capped by a clear azure sky. Nice. Been waiting hundreds of years for this. Mmmmmmm ….

As for those of us in 800×600, it’s not the monitor, y’know, it’s the viewing habit; I almost never zoom my browser to full screen, it’s instead just another 800-ish by 600-ish panel free-floating on my desk so I can grab a bit of Grail while waiting on other things, but still ‘appear’ to be (ahem) busy at work 😉 In the Blue View, it still a bit snipped on the edges, but not so much I don’t know what’s going on over there.

  7. Design logo
The design interlaced with the circle is a device called a Bowen knot. It was popular with Roman mosaic designers. It seems to have originated in Egypt amongst the Copts. The design is also found later in Celtic art in the British isles, and in the east in Islamic geometric design.

The device is essentially Pythagorean. The portion of the Bowen knot inside the circle is called a gammadion, and is derived from the geometric diagram used to prove the Pythagorean theorem, sometimes known as the Bhaskara diagram.

PS I can’t read the Preview comment or even the “input format”. Dark blue against black?

    1. logo design
      Hi Lee,

Thanks for that info – all new to me.

I wasn’t fully aware of the design’s symbolic associations when I came up with it (I’ve since seen it on earrings, and also I cant help thinking of those horrid breeze blocks you get in garden walls).

Anyway, for my take on it, see my blog post here

      Ross

  8. thumbs up
great Greg. Love the finer lines and colour tweaks and layout. The logo is very good……..but you must admit there is something very special about the old logo. The old logo re-vamped in modern tech, cycled accasionly would be nice :{)

  9. First impression
Love it. Looks great and seems easier to get around. I really like what you did with the blogs. I love having the names attached so I can find my favorite bloggers quickly. I agree with the comment that Sub Rosa needs a more prominent place however.

Spambots must be smarter than me because I can’t find ‘userhelp’ and therefore have to leave my comments here.

  10. New look
Very nice, Greg. But – there are only 7 blogs listed on the front page. Couldn’t we have more than that, please? Also the Input formula below this box I’m typing in is unreadable to me except the words ‘(quote) tags’ which are in orange. The blue just disappears into the background. Sorry to be negative, but you did ask for comments. Otherwise, it’s very readable – thank you.

    Regards, Kathrinn

P.S. Have just discovered I have the same blue on black problem with my Preview – that’s horrible, truly – I can’t read what I’ve written.

    1. Fix in the works
      Hi Kathrinn,

Yes, Lee pointed out the same thing. It’s not intentional, I just missed this part of the page – I’ll fix it after I get a semi-decent sleep under my belt. Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime.

I realise that some people want more than 7 blogs…it’s a compromise between using too much of the page space, with author names taking up extra space over the old layout. Currently the 7th most recent blog is a week old – I think if people are viewing the page outside that time frame, it won’t take much for them to just click on the ‘More’ button and view the full list? Most visitors come here multiple times during the week, so they shouldn’t need more than seven.I am open to petitions though. 😉

      Kind regards,
      Greg

      1. Comment colors
Comment/preview colors should be fixed now. If they look the same, you might need to hit Shift-Reload in your browser, or empty your cache (to remove the current style sheet).

        Kind regards,
        Greg

  12. Good Work!
Looks great Greg! It was fun to log on and see this whole new layout. It was sort of like a wonderful surprise present. My sincere thanks to everyone who worked so hard on this and I’m very pleased with the results. Much love and hugs all around. Pam —————————–Truth is stranger than fiction.
