At least 76 dead in Australia's wildfire hell
Posted by Kat at 10:07, 08 Feb 2009Hell has broken out in Rick's part of the world.
Includes graphic descriptions - not for the faint of heart:
65 dead, towns totally destroyed in Australia's wildfire hell.
Another article about the Oz wildfires mentioned that 60% of Queensland - where Greg's from - is flooded, and warned people to watch out for crocs in urban areas.
Update: Australia's worst bushfire disaster: Scale of the tragedy defies comprehension.
The death toll from horrific bushfires across Victoria this weekend has reached 76, surpassing the number of people who perished in the 1983 Ash Wednesday blazes.
More than 700 homes have been lost in what is being described as 'Hell on Earth', and it is feared the death toll will pass 100.
Twenty-six fires continue to burn across Victoria; 12 of those are out of control.
Long Daily Mail article with several photos, including a NASA satellite image.

I watched the news tonight in a state of shocked horror - this bushfire tragedy is almost beyond belief. My heart goes out to those involved.
At the other end of the country, with my feet in a puddle and torrential rain deafening me, I would still rather face crocs than those walls of flame.
Thanks from (a somewhat soggy) Kathrinn

This news seems to have gone global, but our news in Oz said tonight that there are 131 confirmed dead (and more to find most likely) and 750 homes lost, including several whole townships. 115 square miles of bushland burned out, not to mention the wildlife that had no hope of escaping the raging fury.
Devastating.

The news is being broadcast here in the UK too. It seems that the fires were started deliberately.
This reminds me of other major wildfires throughout the world over the past few years. All of them have been started deliberately too.
Is it just carelessness, limited understanding of the consequences, or perhaps some other more deeper reason behind it all.
The weather has gone crazy globally. There has been talk on the internet of countries interfering/trying to control the weather. As any major change in the weather can last up to two years or more and travel in the atmosphere over the whole globe any interference has to have a long term consequence. Perhaps this is what we are all suffering from now.
My heart truly does go out to everyone in Australia at the moment, and for those who are homeless, and luckily still surviving, I wish them all the best, and good luck in the future. For those who have lost loved ones to the fire, I give all my sympathy, and emotional support.
