- Value

See video

I see value in every form of life I see value, the snow, a strawberry, a fly,
I see value in the mineral kingdom, the assembly of the stars,
I see value in wine as long as the meal lasts, an inadvertant smile,
the weariness of he who has not been spared,
two old people who love each other,
I see value in what will not be worth anything tomorrow and today is still worth little,
I see value in all of the wounds
I see value in saving water, repairing a pair of shoes, to silence in time, to rush to a scream,
to ask before sitting,
to be thankful without recalling for what
I see value in the wanderer’s voyage, the nun’s convent,
the prisoner’s patience, whoever’s the fault may be,
I see value in using the verb to love, and the hypothesis that a creator exists.
I haven’t known many of these values.

- Valore

See video

Beautiful.

Value is a funny thing. There are those who would say that value, like love, lies someplace in the beholder.

The other day I saw a pair of monarch butterflies chasing one another above a pond. There was a thick sheen of crude oil on the pond's surface, and when the eucalyptus leaves shivered in the wind and let the sunlight through, I could see rainbows gliding across the water. I watched their fragile dance for a while, marveling at the apparent ease with which the butterflies wove through the treacherous currents of air. Then, in the blink of an eye, one of them miscalculated a loop and plunged into the slick. It struggled for a few desperate moments and then it was still. The other one looped above it for a minute, as if in confusion, then fluttered up to the treetops and out of sight.

I don't know why, but I nearly cried.

Erri's words affect me in a similar way. Whatever the value is, I find that its not so much sad, as overwhelming. But whether it is internal, external, or both - I cannot say. And actually, I'm not sure if it really matters.

"I see value" is one of the more crass phrases of materialistic modernity, so juxtaposing "I see value" with things of actual value is ironic - very successfully ironic, and we all know that success makes the man just like clothes make the man.

Value is only materialistic when it is applied to money or the things money can buy. There is a great deal in our world with value which has no material cost attached - birdsong, sunsets, a dog's faithfulness, love, the knowing in a cat's eyes, the sound of the sea, etc. - don't you think these kind of things also have 'value'?

In normal conversations, the phrase "I see value" means the commenter sees a contribution. The contribution can be to better understanding, easier work, fewer problems, happier people, happier cats.

It doesn't refer to money.
