Dear Katya, Thank you for this blog. This is an event that I was not aware of and found it to be very exciting. I raised horses for much of my life and was an able racer, winning many ribbons, trophies and prizes. I admired the fact that in the Palio they ride bareback, as that was my most favorite way to ride.

In competition we were not allowed to ride bareback for safety reasons but for my own enjoyment that was the way one would find me, just a simple hackamore (no bit) with a leather one ear bridal/headstall and a soft cotton rein (one single rope which attached with snaps to the shanks of the hackamore, not two seperate reins) which allowed the rider to do tricks and not lose control of the horse, ride with one hand/arm control in order to use flags or carry/pick up something.

The majority of my horses were Quarter horses (A.Q.H.A. registered - American Quarter Horse Association) known for their powerful hindquarters, made for great bursts of speed for short distances, one quarter of a mile races, thus the 'Quarter' part of their name. This breed would make an excellent Palio race horse.

Again, thank you Katya for the enjoyable and informative links. Many hugs to you. Love, Pam -----------------------------Truth is stranger than fiction.

Ciao Katya

I enjoyed reading about the Palio and looking at the pictures. The architecture of the buildings is very interesting! Thank-you for another good post and the links! I wish more people would read your highly educational posts!

What do you think?
