Giuseppe Balsamo Conte di Cagliostro durante la sua permanenza a Parigi realizzò delle croquettes di cioccolato aromatizzato con profumi attribuendoli poteri afrodisiaci e di ringiovanimento. La sua idea ebbe molto successo.

Voltaire aveva l’abitudine di bere 12 tazze di cioccolata miste a caffè ogni giorno.

O albero prodotto in estreme regioni
e gloria delle sponde messicane
ricco di succhi dei quali va superba
la cioccolata nettare celeste

A te ceda ogni pianta
e ogni prodotto dei fiori:
l’alloro che le glorie
intreccia nei trionfi, la quercia, l’ontano
e il prezioso cedro del Libano

Si dice che Adamo, capostipite dell’Umanità
cacciato dalle gloriose sedi
abbia introdotto nell’India occidentale un albero
che acclimatatosi al suolo ospitale produsse dal tronco

semi di longevità
doni di Bacco di Opimio,
vini segnalati da molti lustri
ai quali l’età avanzata distrusse e il nome e la Patria

Sturò in onore di Bacco i vini di Creta e del Messico
purché una viva pioggia
generatrice di pensiero benefico
e vena d’ingegno m’irrori il petto

O umore inviato dagli astri
e inclita divina bevanda!
Rugiade di Castalda, state lontano
quest’onda sgorghi per i poeti da un perenne ruscello.

O gloria di porpora fiammante
e stella della gloria vaticana
o Francesco, quanto succo deve
ai tuoi ardimenti ed alla tua penna!

Si diceva che intaccasse il digiuno:
tu brillante fiaccola di verità
e vindice dei Superi,
sciogli i freni della tirannia

Tu dolcemente scorri dal gorgo profondo di sentenze;
