24 Giugno: The Night of Fires in the Roman tradition - La Notte dei Fuochi nella tradizione Romana

JUNE 24: THE NIGHT OF THE FIRES
In the night of Saint John Erodiade’s shadow, called all the witches on the Laterano’s fields, where crying Salomè’s shadow walking.
The witches on the brooms or together the devils arrived flying for the meeting that lasted until the dawn.
So the Romans playng little bells and cow bells ran with lighted torches to trying to see the witches fly in the dark.
It was necessary don’t wake up “Er Nocchilia” (a terrifying character: a mix of Enoch and Elia) that still sleeps under the Holy Stairs; twill sleep until the Apocalispe Day, will belie the Antichrist and it will be the end.
But the music and the songs “carciofiolari abbruzzesi” (bands of 4 elements: 2 harps, 1 violin, 1 triangle) woke up the “Sleeping Beauties”, behind the closet windows that in this way ran to the feast:
“Beauties that go on the 7 sleeps.
Wake up this night is Saint John.
It is the night of spells. It is night of Magic,
The witches rump on devils, flies in company ”
Going out the Beauties left in front the doors and windows, brooms and jars of kitchen salt as deterrent to prevent the witches to enter into the houses; the witches being curious before to enter into the houses would be forced to stop themselves to count all the sorghum yarns of the broom and all the grains of the salt. So the most long night of the year would be spent very quickly and the Sun dawning would have swept away the witch.
In the meanwhile between the churches “Santa Croce in Gerusalemme” and the “Basilica di San Giovanni” the “Fires of Saint John” was lighted to oppose the light at this night of Witches’Sabbath.
After this all together went to the “Slope of the Spirits” where was played the fundamental rite of this celebration: to eat “Slug in stewed”, because this feast was also the chance of reconciliation for the people that in the year have had conflicts and divergences; maybe as remember of the ancient Carisie that the ancient Romans celebrated in honour of the Goddess Concordia.

24 GIUGNO: LA NOTTE DEI FUOCHI
La notte di San Giovanni, il fantasma di Erodiade, chiamava a raccolta le streghe sui prati del Laterano, dove piangendo si aggirava il fantasma di Salomè.
Le streghe a cavallo dei diavoli o di scope arrivavano in volo per il raduno che durava fino all’alba.
I romani allora, suonando campanelli e campanacci accorrevano da tutte le parti e tenendo le torce accese cercavano di vedere le streghe volare nel buio.
Bisognava però stare attenti a non svegliare “Er Nocchilia” (una figura terrificante che unisce Enoch ed Elia) che ancora dorme sotto la Scala Santa; dormirà fino al giorno dell’Apocalisse, sbugiarderà l’Anticristo e sarà la fine.
I suoni ed i canti “carciofiolari abruzzesi” (complessi di 4 elementi: 2 arpe, 1 violino, 1 triangolo) però svegliavano le Belle Addormentate, dietro le finestre chiuse che correvano ad unirsi alla festa:
“Belle che andate pe’ li sette sonni
svejateve ‘stanotte è San Giovanni.
E’ la notte d’incantesimi. E’ notte di Magia,
le streghe, in groppa ai diavoli, volano in compagnia ”
Uscendo le Belle lasciavano davanti alle porte e finestre,scope e barattoli di sale grosso deterrente per impedire alle streghe di entrare nelle case; le streghe essendo curiose prima di entrare nelle case sarebbero state costrette a fermarsi per contare tutti i fili di saggina della scopa e tutti i grani del sale. Così la notte più lunga dell’anno sarebbe trascorsa velocemente ed il Sole albeggiando avrebbe spazzato via la strega.
Intanto fra Santa Croce in Gerusalemme e la Basilica di San Giovanni si accendevano “I fuochi di San Giovanni” per opporre la la luce alla notte tregenda.
Poi andavano tutti alla “Salita degli Spiriti” dove si compiva il rito fondamentale della festa: mangiare lumache in umido, perché questa festa era anche l’occasione di riconciliazione per le persone che durante l’anno avevano avuto contrasti e divergenze; forse in ricordo alle antiche Carisie celebrate dagli antichi Romani in onore della Dea Concordia.
