STROMBOLI

STORIES FROM GINOSTRA (STROMBOLI’VILLAGE).
Stromboli is one of the fine islands at north of Sicily (Isole Eolie: Alicudi, Filicudi, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, Stromboli), that the myth wants as Aeolus’s home.
Stromboli, like Vulcano, is a live volcano (It’s original name is Iddu – in italian: Esso/Lui, in english: It), with constant daily eruptions. In the island there are two villages Stromboli and Ginostra, the little stories that I show you belongs to Ginostra, the village more ancient and more peculiar.

1) THE CHILD OF LAZZARO
Rumors says that often, in the night, a child with the age between 7-8 years, wanders along the paths of Ginostra, in the Lazzaro zone. He appears near the houses, says that he have lost himself and asks a glass of water, but when his unaware interlocutor goes to bring the glass of water the child vanishs leaving as a proof some weted shells. The elderly people says that it is the spirit of one of children that disappeared at Lazzaro swallowed from the sea in the begin of ‘900.

2) THE PRIEST WITH THE HORNS
There was a old man that dedicated all his life to the care of his vineyards, so that his relatives found him dead exactly between that vineyards. Since that day, some time, a strange character appears in that lands: a man dressed with the priest’s soutane, with a little head and big hat from which comes out long horns. The tradition wants that this strange character be the damned soul of the poor old man that was not capable to free himself from the load of his land that had loved for all his life until the death.

3) THE FUGITIVE
In the begin of 80’s a german man arrived to Ginostra; in short time he found a job and integrated himself in the community very well. After some months Carabinieri with helicopters and motor patron vessel surrounded the island.
In this way the people of Ginostra found that the stranger was a terrorist, but he was so loved from them that they helped him to hide himself into a cave until the Police Force gone away. After all this uproar the stranger abandoned Stromboli. He gone to Rome but after some weeks from his arrive he was arrested because drunk generated a brawl in a pub. The end of this story is that the man served his punishment in prison, but when he was free came back to Ginostra together his family to thank the people that helped himself when he was into hiding.

4) THE GOLDEN POT
A night Iolanda dreamed the spirit of her dead relative that urged her to go in a cave where she would have found a pot full of golden coins. The spirit warned Iolanda to go alone, without any company, in the cave because if she would gone with another person instead to find the golden coins she would have had a bad surprise. The morning after Iolanda shocked by that dream asked to her sister to take her in the cave…When the 2 sisters arrived in the dark site of the cave was surprised from somebody that they could not see and that savagely beaten up themselves…So they ran away scared! Since that experience Iolanda convinced herself that is not good thing don’t belive to the spirits that appears in the dreams…

SIMPLE SIMPLE RECIPE
Ingredients for 4 people. Capers: 200 grams; potatos: 600 grams; a pinch of origan; olive-oil: 4 little spoons; salt, pepper, vinegar, and,optional, garlic.
Put in bath the capers in sweet water for 12 hours changing the water every 4 hours.
Boil the potatos, peel off them and flavour together the capers and the others ingredients.

STORIE DA GINOSTRA (BORGO DI STROMBOLI).
Stromboli è una delle belle isole a nord della Sicilia (Isole Eolie: Alicudi, Filicudi, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, Panarea, Stromboli), che il mito vuole come casa di Eolo.
Stromboli, come Vulcano, è un vulcano (il suo nome originale è Iddu – in italiano: Esso/Lui) sempre attivo, con costanti e giornaliere eruzioni. Nell’isola ci sono due borghi Stromboli e Ginostra. Le piccolo storie che vi presento appartengono a Ginostra, il borgo più antico e più particolare.

1) IL BAMBINO DI LAZZARO
Alcune voci dicono che spesso, di notte, un bambino con un’età fra i 7-8 anni, si aggiri lungo
le viuzze di Ginostra, nella zona di Lazzaro. Appare vicino le case, dice che si è perso e chiede un bicchiere d’acqua, ma quando il suo ignaro interlocutore gli va a prendere il bicchiere d’acqua il bambino sparisce lasciando a testimonianza alcune conchiglie bagnate.
Gli anziani dicono che si tratti dello spirito di uno dei bambini scomparsi a Lazzaro, inghiottiti dal mare all’inizio del ‘900.

2) IL PRETE CON LE CORNA
C’era un vecchietto che dedicò tutta la sua vita alla cura dei suoi vigneti, tanto che i suoi familiari lo trovarono morto proprio fra le viti.
Da quel giorno, di tanto in tanto in quelle terre, si vede apparire uno strano personaggio:
un uomo vestito da prete con una testa piccolina ed un enorme cappello da cui fuoriescono lunghe corna. La tradizione vuole che questo strano personaggio sia l’anima dannata del povero vecchietto che non riuscì a liberarsi dal peso del suo terreno che aveva tanto amato per tutta la vita fino alla morte.

3) IL FUGGIASCO
Agli inizi degli anni ’80 un uomo tedesco arrivò a Ginostra; in breve tempo trovò un lavoro e si inserì molto bene nella comunità. Dopo alcuni mesi Carabinieri con elicotteri e motovedette circondarono l’isola. Fu così che gli abitanti di Ginostra scoprirono che lo straniero era un terrorista, ma ormai era così amato che lo aiutarono a nascondersi in una grotta finché le forze dell’ordine andarono via. Dopo tutto questo trambusto lo straniero abbandonò Stromboli, si trasferì a Roma, ma dopo alcune settimane dal suo arrivo fu arrestato perché ubriaco aveva generato una rissa in un pub. La conclusione di questa storia è che l’uomo scontò la sua pena in carcere, ma non appena fu libero tornò a Ginostra con tutta la sua famiglia per ringraziare la gente che lo aveva aiutato durante la sua latitanza.

4) LA PENTOLA D’ORO
Una notte Iolanda sognò lo spirito di una sua parente defunta che la esortò ad andare in una grotta dove avrebbe trovato una pentola piena di monete d’oro. Lo spirito avvisò Iolanda di andare da sola senza alcuna compagnia altrimenti invece di trovare il tesoro avrebbe trovato una brutta sorpresa. La mattina successiva Iolanda sconvolta dal sogno chiese alla sorella di accompagnarla nella grotta…Quando le due sorelle arrivarono nella zona buia della grotta furono sorprese da qualcuno che non riuscirono a vedere e che le malmenarono violentemente…Così che fuggirono via terrorizzate! Da quella esperienza Iolanda si convinse che non è bene non credere agli spiriti che appaiono nei sogni…

RICETTA SEMPLICE SEMPLICE
Ingredienti per 4 persone. Capperi, 200 grammi; patate, 600 grammi; un pizzico di origano; 4 cucchiaini di olio di oliva; sale, pepe, aceto, e aglio – facoltativo.
Mettere a bagno i capperi in acqua dolce per circa 12 ore cambiando l’acqua ogni 4 ore.
Bollire le patate, sbucciarle e condirle unite ai capperi con gli altri ingredienti.
