- Brevi cenni storici:

I agree that there is really something special about owls. One night I was returning from a ritual at a stone circle and along a country road we caught a white owl in the car headlights. Stopping the car we got out and just gaped at it; the owl was a huge white owl, sitting on a fence, emanating strength and calm. I've always remembered that experience, not that owls are unusual or anything, just that this one seemed to KNOW. Know what I mean?

I know how you feel about owls.I think it is the quietness and stillness of them.
For many years I had an injured frogmouth, commonly called mopokes here as that is what they seem to be saying.
He sat on a log in my garden and I fed him on meat and insects and sometimes mice.
Most people who went into the garden couldn't see him as he blended so well with the log.
He was happy to stay there where he was well fed as he knew he couldn't fly.
I had other frogmouths over the years, always injured ones but none came close to Brutus for his imposing look and stillness.
I saw huge owls in North America which stunned me as I had no idea they grew so big.And all had that amazing power, that they could hold your attention, and give you the feeling that they knew something you didn't, and never would.

CIAO!

About the owl I have thought to copy these others information for you from ATHENE NOCTUA: LA SIGNORA DELLE TENEBRE. L’IMMAGINE DELLA CIVETTA ATTRAVERSO L’ICONOGRAFIA PREISTORICA (The Lady of the Darkness, the Owl in the prehistoric iconography).
It is a articulate treatise all in Italian language with this short introduction in Italian and English:

“The first iconographic testimony of the Owl comes from theTrois Frères Cave (Ariège), situated in Southern France. The owl nest, engraved on the cav wall draft of from the cultural horizon of the middle magdalenian period (13,000 a.C., Upper Paleolithic). The most represented elementes in the prehistoric artistic production are circles similar to eyes. Meaningful it is their associative tie with megalithic tombs (cf., idol-eyes,III millenium; mycenean tombs, XV sec. a.C.) and the cove-sanctuary, by a double valence: preannouncement of death and in the same time, according the ethnological data coming out from Southerastren Europe, source of life. Consequently, we can create a data base with all the decorated elements associated to the Goddess Owl Bird and they allow us to extrapolate, time for time, in relation to the context, the deeper meant one of Athene noctua in the time: torrente that flows or stream waters or rain droops; elements like as V and X; meanders/mazes or bands of meanders; triple parallels lines; round or radiating eyes; eyes like as brush; spout masks; simple chevron; double or triple chevron; chevron with semicircular line; single or multiple eyebrow; decorations like as cupmark; eyes like snake coils; eyes like Arietes horns. The present communication does not expect to bring innovationes on the closely ornithological plan rather than to contribute to increase the collection of cultural ornithological data for a deeper understanding of the Owl, its environmental protection and the protection of the species through one aimed spreading.”
