Face on Mars (not so much)

The controversial "Face" found in the Cydonia region of Mars is looking more like a heap of dust, to me at least. New images from the ESA's Mars Express orbiter confirm that the features are natural. There are many hyperlinks in this SPACE.com article for one to develop a conclusion. Are there those that see something else?

It does not look like much indeed.

It is made from collected data and not an actual photo I understand. I would have been curious to have an actual 3D model to play with.

A few years ago Space Command placed charges in the interior to collapse the structure into a dust heap!

Existing images of nearby areas have always shown a much higher resolution than those taken of the face: so given that the new images were taken by the Mars Express Orbiter - which has better resolution camera systems on board - why are we still seeing what appears to be low resolution images?

I am not convinced at all that there is a giant sculpted face on Mars, but why the low-res images? I would like to see this in full detail so that once and for all, we can determine the facts. If there is nothing to hide, then what is the problem?

Because they (NASA, ESA, the russians) are looking for interesting geological features on Mars. And they are looking for langing sites for future missions. A random pile of rocks is not interesting. Most of the images I have seen of that area look like a random pile of rocks.

Hi Nostra,

Those images were created with the best High Resolution Stereo Camera. This ESA link has some actual photographs.

I don't see a face. That leads me to conclude that the 1976 photo was misleading. Of course, I'll be accused of defending the big money people.

That's as good as it gets. Do you see a face?

There are many anomalous sites remaining to be viewed in high res but that did not get as much publicity as the face.

Some stuff really looks odd too.

Will be curious to see if some of those are ever surveyed in high res.

Hi Richard,

At one time the Mars Express was scheduled to map the entire planet in hi rez. I don't believe that has changed.

Hi Bill,

Something to keep an 'eye' on then.
