Is There a Ghost in this Image?

Is there a ghost in this image?

Dr. CiarĂ¡n O'Keeffe is well-known in the United Kingdom - at least, to the paranormal-inclined - as a result of his appearances on Living TV's paranormal television series Most Haunted, and also on account of his criticism of that show for misleading viewers using "showmanship and dramatics". The problems he came across while working on TV features about the paranormal led O'Keeffe to set up his own team, with whom he is filming investigations under the name Ghostlands.

On Halloween the Ghostlands team posted their first outing on YouTube, an investigation into a supposedly haunted World War II bunker on the Channel Islands. The 20 minute mini-documentary shows the setting up, possible manifestations of EVP, and finishes with a ghostly shadow fleeing the researchers' cameras (screen capture at the beginning of this post). Those that enjoy ghost-hunting shows should find plenty to enjoy in Ghostlands, especially if you're sitting home alone on a dark and stormy night...

This is a brief insight into a paranormal investigation conducted over a number of days where I had control and was not bound by the rules and expectations of television. Where I could choose a location that had never been shown before, one I wanted to investigate, one that I thought you would find as fascinating as I have and with a team I had chosen. But most of all, I wanted to present you with the evidence, to "let the evidence speak".

But this will also be about you. You are ghost enthusiasts, investigators, paranormal fans, cynics, sceptics and believers and those who simply want to find out if the "truth is out there". So get involved by contributing with your comments. It's about recognising that this show is organic and can develop if there are the means available. So say what can be done differently, what can be done better, what you are expecting, what you don't like, but more importantly what you do like, what you've learned, but also...did you notice anything I didn't see?

I'm a big fan of O'Keefe -- I used to watch Most Haunted just for his calm appraisal of situations. A few years ago I saw hi min the audience at Alan Moore's Unearthing performances and got so starstruck I hid in my seat. Had to maintain cool somehow.

Will watch this when I'm not on officetime.

Does anyone know which island / bunker this is? I'm pretty sure this isn't Jersey (where I am from) - just curious. I know several of the bunkers in Jersey have some similar stories to this one with regard to hauntings...

Well, having watched it... It may have bucked the structure that a TV show would demand, but it still didn't do what I was hoping it would. The soundtrack made it impossible to judge what sound there genuinely was during the investigation, and having it build up and punctuate on that gasmask was pure theatrics, and irritated me.

Having said that, I liked the 'light phenomena...not, it's a rat' bit, the EVP was interesting to watch and that final 'ghost' image was... well, interesting. But what I'd have liked to have happened is instead of just cutting off after the replays have a quick go at asking what that shape might have been -- like they did with the rat and to a certain extent the EVP.

Will watch more, but this isn't the evidence-based investigation I was hoping for, at least not the way it was presented.

The better paranormal shows on TV are full of this stuff. The technics for detection have advanced mightily. Ghost Adventures, Haunted Collector,Ghost Mine, Ghost Hunters, et al - these are all crews that use the latest and most effective gadgetry - infrared, full spectrum, UV filming - various EVP tools. Academics tend to think these shows are too lowbrow, but they are anything but. This is the cutting edge whether anyone wants to admit it or not. It is advancing the science.

Look at the open door at the end of the hall there is light coming from that room. And if you look down the crack of the open door you see movement wich is what I think caused the shadow.
