The Invisibles Omnibus

Here’s a necessity for any Grailer’s bookshelf, if they don’t have it already: an omnibus of all 3 volumes of Grant Morrison’s seminal comic book series, The Invisibles, released in the next seven days and available for pre-order now from Amazon US and Amazon UK. Comprising some 59 issues in total, it’s a bargain. For those who aren’t familiar with the series:

The plot follows (more or less) a single cell of The Invisible College, a secret organization battling against physical and psychic oppression using time travel, magic, meditation, and physical violence.[2]

For most of the series, the team includes leader King Mob; Lord Fanny, a Brazilian shaman; Boy, a former member of the NYPD; Ragged Robin, a telepath with a mysterious past; and Jack Frost, a young hooligan from Liverpool who may be the next Buddha. Their enemies are the Archons of Outer Church, interdimensional alien gods who have already enslaved most of the human race without their knowledge.

There’s no shortage of references in the comics to topics that TDG readers will find familiar. Good fun! Though remember, not particularly suitable for children.

    All in one place!

Good idea — it’s so hard to lug those 7 graphic novel volumes around with me to show fellow sentients…

This plus Alan Moore’s Promethea I’d take with me on a desert island…

  2. The Invisible College Updated as the Invisibles
This’s a true mindbending masterpiece and the joke of it is it’s supposed to be fiction but many of the wildest most unbelievable stuff in its pages’re actually true experiences Grant Morrison’s actually went through himself.

And I know that from personal experience because when I first started reading it some time during the middle of the last decade I found myself thinking f*ck has this guy been living in the back of my head or’ve I been living in the back of his?

In fact so much of the weirdery Dale (or Dane?) goes through corresponded to so much of my own weird teens onwards I found myself wondering did everything I go through come about because some baldy Scots* twat trapped me like a fly in the amber of his superb story telling?

Or did I in my desperation to get so many of these things off my chest reach out and somehow make unwitting contact with him?

    Anyway do yourself a favour.

Read the comic world’s equivalent of LSD and DMT.

Because man you’re go’n’o be trippin’ balls!

*I actually had an experience some time during the first half of the last decade where getting blasé about seeing tennis ball sized black and white ‘energy’ balls with little wriggly tails whizzing about my attention was momentarily seized by this huge medicine ball sized black ‘comet’ whizzing past me.

As I tracked it on its way out our front window I became aware out the corner my eye there was this pitch black three dimensional silhouette of a Scotsman standing beside me.

How the f*ck I knew it was a Scotsman I don’t know. The silhouette didn’t seem to be wearing anything that might be taken for a kilt or bagpipes.

But the ‘Scotsman’ sort of thrust his chest forward and bounded or leapt through the air into me only for something already inside me to blam him back out with a peculiar right angled swing of its forearm I later found myself adapting for disengaging other entities giving me a hard time.

The thing is I don’t think that was Grant Morrison. In fact I’m almost certain I know the magus it actually was. But in the light of the above you’ll probably see why I still find the Scottish connection peculiar.
