Why We…’Believe’

Ugh. Three pages of ugh in fact, and it wasn’t until the final paragraph that I thought it started being more balanced…but that only lasted a sentence, and then there was the “good fight” thing. I’ve tried writing a commentary about it, but it’s going to end up book length – so I leave it to anybody else that wants to comment.

My comment, in a nutshell – “belief” isn’t something restricted to the supernatural…

  1. Why We Believe
I’m not saying re-incarnation is a self indulgent hustle, but the problem I have with it, and I believe many have the same problem, is I have never met a person who claimed to be the re-incarnation of everyman/woman… No stable boy with the pox, or rat catcher, or someone anonymous. Always someone famous.I never hear, Hi, I was a leper in a past life.

do not distrub this ruble. Sapho

    1. Really?
I have read accounts of people that thought in previous lives were fairly common folks. I cannot provide an example right now, I’m not much of an expert on the subject I’m afraid.

Re-incarnation is puzzling, and it seems to me that none of the theories currently used to explain the phenomenon of remembering past lives is 100% satisfactory. Not the ‘skeptic’ one, nor the ‘believer’ one.

Perhaps you should read some of the books and research on the subject, the vast majority of which document cases of “ordinary” past lives. Just Google for Ian Stevenson or Raymond Moody. Here is a bibliography link:

      1. revealing my ignorance
ok it is not the first time that people discover my ignorance, and they have told me so. Please don’t feel insulted anyone. And perhaps there could be a short summary, with some hints.

Here is the western view of this re-incarnation stuff:
It is a lot like the futbol or football organizations in Europe.

You do well, then you get to play with the better teams. And people all across the nation can see you playing well. Or they see you making a fool of yourself (as a team, let us not forget that), and then the next time you get demoted to play against other fools, being watched by local fans.

This seems a little similar to the re-incarnation stuff. If you don’t do well in your human life, you come back as a dog or cat. Then if you continue to blow it as a dog, etc etc, you end up as a ant, or as a worm. At the time the ancient philosophers made all this up, they did not know about bacteria.

So, pardon my ignorance about the details, how is this different from other justifications about social stratification?

        1. One big problem with your allegory:
There’s one really big problem with your soccer/reincarnation allegory:

          1. David
Well yes, David should be playing in the German Kreisklasse, but he does not speak the language. Or maybe he does, no need to insult the man further.

But to be serious, David’s job is not futbol. It is advertising, and apparently he is good at that.
I let him have the money, it is ok. If he gets back to playing for England (poor schmucks), he is good for about 2 losses.

Also I am on medication for a sore throat, I ask for forgiveness from the English football fans. Also from David, but the man is used to this sort of thing.
