Kung-fu: I feel like calling it kung-fu is wrong somehow. We have worn such a hole in those words from the 1970s, that calling any martial art kung-fu makes it immediately loose its bite. The “nuns” are badass though.

Loch Ness: To the guy calling it an otter in the comments, yes they can get that big and people arguing with him have never seen an otter or a seal from that region AND there is nothing in the photo to compare their sizes.

Attenborough: Come to the US sir, if Ancient Aliens can still limp by for 11 seasons, this will surely make the cut. Attenborough’s voice is enough to sell the show.

Onyx: The article was interesting but the comment section is pure cancer! Also that strange moment when my profile image works for the article.

“Because at the end of the day science is about evidence, not wishful thinking,” they wrote.”

It is astonishing to me how ossified current scientific orthodoxy has become. Attenborough was “speculating” – always a part of human inquiry – but so touchy and innervated has become a scientific establishment in the habit of living in terror of upsetting its handlers and funders that the merest whiff of something imaginative sends then into hissy fits.

    1. wishful “thinking”
The lack of open-mindedness, no common sense, of science today is why we are so far behind. Every invention starts as nothing more than imagination, no more real than Bugs Bunny, but then becomes something amazing. We, as a society, wouldn’t exist without wishful thinking.

      It’s actually pathetic.

      1. Aquatic (“All Wet”) Scientist Theory
I’d have to say much of what we consider science today will be exposed as wishful thinking in the future (haha). Academia is far better at poo-pooing new theories than generating new ones!

David Attenborough is awesome. He’s in it for the right reasons – not for ego, but because he genuinely cares about nature. If he did a documentary on brushing your teeth, I’d sit there and watch it totally enthralled. If I was a kid, he’s the kind of teacher that would inspire me to study science, and not the likes of de Grasse.

I’m overjoyed to hear that Attenborough is still going strong! Live forever.

Great selection of articles Greg!! I love Mondays now.

Dogs have dreams, so do cats.
We see that, a dog dreams of running, then wakes up, looks surprised, and then realizes, oh shit I am in the real world.

Do they hve these ideas, as humans have, that the dream world is perhaps more real?

You would have to ask them, but they can’t type. No opposable thumbs and all that.

But I would really like to know. They are conscious like we are.

And then there is the octopus. THey think, but what do they think? They don’t live long.
If they lived longer, they might be a threat to simple people.

Really, we are not the only intelligent species on this planet.

    1. Whenever these arguments come
Whenever these arguments come up I project how the alleged higher intelligence ET’s must speculate about Earth humans. Do the earthlings really perform what could be called “thinking” – as we ET’s know thinking to be?
