News Briefs 25-10-2013

1. Fixxored (I think)
Could you fix that link to the Peruvian mummies, please?
Ta!
Terri in Joburg
Can’t read Grant’s mind as to the exact story it was meant to link to, but I think I’ve grabbed the relevant link and swapped it into the news briefs.

1. The highest temperature evah!!!!!!
It’s so depressing. I subscribe to this site because I live in the hope that it will occasionally throw up something interesting – something that the consensus opinion has dismissed or ignored. Hopefully something strange and wonderful.

I like to believe that this is the site that Mulder would have got his news from.

But what do I get? Nothing. Absolutely f-all nothing. Is there really NOTHING going on of any interest on the whole bloody planet?

What you do come up with is ludicrous alarmist rubbish. “The highest temperature in 44,000 years.” Really. I will bet £100 with anyone who reads this, that that study will be totally debunked within five years.

Get a grip.

1. a grip
You’re telling TDG to get a grip and you are spazzing over a day of news? You’ve been here since 2009 and after all that time you’ve decided that today, it’s official, there is no good news EVER on TDG? If you don’t like the news and don’t like anything you see on TDG then why bother? Why bother commenting and why bother coming back to be continuously disappointed day in and day out, because apparently TDG hasn’t had ANY good news for the past 4 fours?! Well I for one and several others enjoy the news briefs and discussions TDG provides and those hard working individuals who make it possible. That’s why I donate to them. TDG is a great community and if you don’t like what you see here, well then don’t come back. I agree that not every piece of news is interesting, but it’s interesting to someone, and the moderators are just trying to spread the word and give people options, that’s all. You want to see something interesting happen on this planet? Go outside, look up and watch a bird fly by. Better yet, why don’t you to go out and find your own stories and report them back here that you think would be more interesting? Find some awesome news to SHARE with this community. Seriously, I’m curious what you would come up with, instead of whining about ALL the news TODAY and for the past 4 years.

I agree with you to a good degree. Though there are sometimes links to stuff that is “beyond the pale” much of the stuff linked to is the same as on the mainstream “science” sites.

I too would like to see more focus on the stuff that is beyond the mainstream. Some of it will turn out to be dren but at the very least it will help people to nudge their thinking beyond their usual routines and to keep exploring beyond the status quo.

1. Beyond the mainstream
Although it’s impossible to please everybody every time, we news admins try to keep a balance between the trending developments in Science & Culture, and the ‘fringier’ side of things. Part of our ‘excluded middle’ policy.

Personally I feel that deviating too much to either side of the spectrum has the risk of losing proper perspective. We don’t want to become a copycat of Prison Planet or Rense. But we also don’t want to be a second Boing Boing.

I don’t think there is anyone that wants to be enamored with every article.

As for “balance” and “proper perspective” let’s start with the byline “Exploring the fringes of science and history. ” That is what I (and I’d guess others) love about and are interested in seeing on the site. I think it is important to know your audience and to hold to your (TDG’s) excellent purpose.

The fact is that there are many, many large sites that cover the mainstream developments. There are also a few well-known sites that offer a steady diet of inane stuff as being fringe. Then there’s those like the Anomalist that have taken to finding those inane things to mock. You have the opportunity and – based on the byline – the inclination to make your own path. One that avoids falling into any of those approaches. A path of reasonably solid news of boundary-pushing sort.

Of course it isn’t as easy to search out and find news of the boundary pushing that some clear substance to it. But it is doable. It’s out there. 😉 Really though . . . it is. Approach as reporters rather than “rebloggers” Take it on yourselves to determine the news rather than looking for what large aggregators have already deemed newsworthy. Turn over stones, look for the jewels hiding in plain site, wow yourselves and us.

I want to reiterate that you do just that sometimes. If that were not the case, I wouldn’t be using the site. So it’s just a matter of doing it more. Sure there’ll be times when there’s not enough and you use mainstream stuff as filler but keep the focus on the maverick, the heretical, the expanding.

Take that red pill and report on your findings. 🙂

1. Look for the jewels hiding in plain sight
I get what you mean, and I’ll try to do that more often.

But know that turning over stones takes an awful lot of time. Time we admins may not always have because, well, all of us hold day jobs that help us pay for the bills 😉

2. Yeah . . .
Thanks for your thoughtful approach to this. And yeah . . I get the thing about the time. Is there a way to PM through TDG? If so I’ll keep it in mind to send you anything that could be a possible area or topic to look at.

3. Links & suggestions
Links & suggestions to interesting links are always welcome. Each admin has its own e-mail address with which you can reach us. Mine is rpj[at]dailygrail[dot]com 🙂
