Reminds me of a graphic novel I read back in my Heavy Metal days: The Eyes of Doom, by Gimenez.
It's the story of a Vietnam vet who becomes a mystery-novel writer (and a drug junkie) and this Vietnamese kid with a terrifying power.
Life imitates Art ;)
