John Carter is already regarded as a giant failure.
Some critics blame it on the director; others on Disney’s marketing department.
I blame it on a Thern conspiracy. Wake up, Jasoom!

A large jumbo thanks with fries to Rick.

Quote(s) of the Day:

“The objective reality of unidentified aerial phenomena is no longer in doubt,” he wrote in a recent essay. “The climate of suspicion and disinformation, not to mention derision, which still too often surrounds the collection of reports, illustrates a surprising form of intellectual blindness.”

~Yves Sillard, Former CNES Director General.

“I don’t think a powerful country like America finds it acceptable to acknowledge that something strange can fly over and the country can’t clear the skies of it. Another problem can be panic, created by people imagining that their military can’t protect them.”

~Major General Denis Letty, of the COMETA French UFO study group

  1. John Who?
I can recall the marketing campaigns that preceded productions like (the remake of) The Day the Earth Stood Still, ID4 and Avatar. That kind of effort was just not there for John Carter (of Mars!).

As time progressed, it seemed to me like there was something of an embarrassment even, being displayed by Disney because there was rarely any advertising at all (that I ever saw) except for a few announcements when trailers became available.

Also, many people younger than the boomers and before won’t readily associate the name John Carter with such high adventure. So I am not terribly surprised at the crash… though now having seen it, I was delighted as this was the first action-sci fi in a while that didn’t hearken back to some superhero in costume or dressed as a techno-iron.

Personally, I’m waiting for Iron Sky. It looks like both a hoot and a good eye sparkling.

    1. Raising the Bar-soom

I saw it last weekend. I was satisfactorily entertained.

Maybe it was a confusion with the target audience? By Disney’s standards, this was a very violent and bloody movie, but it was still marketed as a family film (PG-13). Any hardcore fan of Frazetta would be disappointed if they expected to enjoy some Barsoonian booty 😉

  2. Fossils and John Carter of Mars!
    Red Pill

As I said before, we are all mestizos! This latest fossil find is seen with interest in Asia. Non-Africans have some Neanderthal DNA. I wonder how much DNA we share with this new species. Our ancestors were very naughty!:) And, I think that we are too conceeded about ourselves!

It’s been about 55 years since I started reading the “Mars Series”. Thinking back, I agree with you. It must be a Thern Conspiracy.

    1. The question is…
Are we humans Martian Mestizos? 😉

This new fossil find it’s fascinating to me not because we’re adding more branches to our family tree, but because it puts us on the perspective that, throughout most of our existence, there were more than one type of intelligent beings co-existing with us.

To me the implications of this realization are enormous.
