Quote of the Day:

“By turning energy into a weapon, we become more efficient and more effective.”

– Rear Adm Nevin Carr, chief of the Office of Naval Research

  1. Shy Aliens
This theory that the Fermi paradox is explained by cautious extraterrestrials that prefer to go quiet in fear of some voracious galactic empire could only work if faster-than-light travel is not only possible, but also fairly easy to accomplish.

Otherwise we should also see the signs of those other news kids on the galactic block who also made the same mistake we already did of sending probes and radio messages before that dreaded last “Oh wow! what’s that over th—”

    1. desctroying planets
Certainly you don’t want to alienate powerful aliens more than you have to, lest they blow up your only planet. I suppose once you have a lot of spare planets it’s ok to be a bit more daring and vocal.

On the other hand, blowing up planets takes a lot of planning and energy. It’s a lot of hard work, trust me. And you have to get the timing just right, otherwise you blow yourself up with the target. And after that, what do you do with all the dust ? After a measely few hundred million years the dust forms new rocks and planets, and then you have to start all over again with blowing it up. The single cell life survives, and evolves again. So if you’re not careful you get a new bunch of annoying aliens, and have to blow the thing up again. Just not worth it.

The cockroaches in your kitchen must be the luckiest bugs in the planet 😛

Yup, and because ‘e’s Canadian, they’re French-Canadian Sikh cockroaches; they’re very polite, have glorious beards and are good cooks.
