  1. Why can’t this happen outside NY, DC, LA or Chicago?
    Hi Earthling –

Why no report in the US?

There was no seismic record of an impact, which would have occurred if this one had of left a crater that big. The crater is thus likely far older than this bollide event.

But these things are scary as hell. There was a hit in Peru, a really nice large airburst over Indonesia, and now this small bolide in Columbia – the South American meteorite hunters are likely to be on their way there, if not hunting the area already.

My gripe – these happened where no one reads English, and this one was over a remote low population area. What would be nice would be for one of these to explode over DC, LA, NY or Chicago – it would do wonders for the sale of my book.

    1. Correction….
…if it had killed someone or erased a city off the face of the earth, then it would have been more attractive to the US television broadcasters. Sadly, I don’t think it would have been covered even if it had made a severe contact because, as mentioned, it happened in a country that doesn’t speak English. Heck, the US barely covers earthquakes that happen abroad.

      1. Non fatal, please

I’d settle for a nice crater in a cornfield in Kansas

      2. Actually…….
That’s not really true. Earthquakes that result in damage and/or loss of life or injuries are almost always reported in the US Press, regardless of where they occur.

        1. Well…
I was trying to be a little sarcastic, trying to make a point that some media networks seem ignore them unless they kill massive amounts of people. Haiti, China, Pakistan, etc. were devastating and absolutely tragic and I don’t doubt that, and they were covered for days and are still discussed. Sorry.

  2. from the Riffing-for-Enlightenment-Dept.
We are story machines. We have built in belief engines. Which has helped us a lot, and has not done anything, and has also hindered us.

Various Ways have been created/discovered in order to harness that. Just one of these is called Christianity.

  3. sasha interview
i’m sorry, but the interviewer’s voice (and damn are his legs long) was so deep and hoarse and grumbly i could not make it through the interview past 10 minutes. his voice was like ozzy osbourne’s voice was struggling to get out of a meat grinder.

  4. A Perfect Circle
The first photo in the Year’s Best Astronomy Photo gallery is the best.

The one with the moon in Greece is amazing too. It reminds me of when I lived in Colorado and could see the huge moon creeping over the horizon of the plains.

  5. Greek pills are hard to swallow

The concoctions have also thrown archaeobotanists a few curve balls. Preliminary analyses of the ancient pills suggest they contain sunflower, a plant that is not thought to have existed in the Old World before Europeans discovered the Americas in the 1400s. If the finding is confirmed, botanists may need to revise the traditional history of the plant and its diffusion, says Touwaide – but it’s impossible for now to be sure that the sunflower in the pills isn’t simply from recent contamination.
