News Briefs 24-11-2009
Posted by Greg at 11:44, 24 Nov 2009Ten thousand readers a day, and barely a comment in sight. Y'all are a quiet bunch…
- 150 years ago today, a remarkable book was published. Hint: it has almost nothing to do with the Godly-design of the banana.
- And 35 years ago today, more monkey business.
- Big news of the day: Man in 'coma' for 23 years said to be conscious the entire time. But is he really conscious, or is he the puppet on the end of his carer's string?
- New map bolsters case for ancient ocean on Mars.
- Building a better alien-calling code. Sooo-eee, Eeee-Teeeee?!
- 2012: Skeptics vs Believers.
- Remote viewer Paul Smith notes the real-life people on which the characters in The Men Who Stare at Goats are based. You can also listen to Paul Smith discussing the topic on the latest Skeptiko podcast.
- Sting says he and his wife have seen a ghost in their house.
- Is Global Warming unstoppable?
- After so many years of being designated an urban myth, the 1935 'Gator in the Sewer' story is confirmed as real.
- Insects may have consciousness. Which makes some whacky DMT trips seem even spookier…
- Glowing alien-like flea takes top photography prize. You should see the size of his tiny camera...
- Monsters of the deep.
- Was there a Stone Age apocalypse?
- 3D computer fly-over of Stonehenge and assorted other ancient sites.
- Collision at the Large Hadron Collider. But proton beams this time, rather than baguettes. Hopefully they remember Egon Spengler's important safety advice…
Quote of the Day:
Don't cross the streams - it would be bad.

While the media continue with their attempts to, rather ironically, deify Darwin, and while I sincerely hope it leads to more people actually reading a classic 'intellectual's coffee table' book, I must put in a word for John Stuart Mill. Possibly not so groundbreaking, Mill's On Liberty (also published in 1859) continues to be a point of reference for many politicians - but don't let that put you off, they've probably never read that either. It is a classic cry for individual freedoms that, while flawed in many respects, reminds one of how little (non-technological) progress we have really made in the last 150 years.
On the other hand, if you want to get into the (monkey) swing of Darwin celebrations without reading, just watch the superb Spencer Tracey in Inherit the Wind, which combines elements of both Darwin and Mill.

Just hit the site for the 9,999th time today. One more to go... ;)
Where do those stairs go?
They go up.
Just a sincere thanks to the mods. It's that time in the states to remember to be thankful so I'll start by being thankful for the mods that fill my need on the weekedays.

Thanks for the laugh. :)

;)
Kind regards,

I've noticed that some insects, even of the same species, have different levels of cognizance. Some insects see me as a threat, some see me as a meal, some see me as an object to go around or over. I find the same levels in the humans I meet.

>> Some insects see me as a threat, some see me as a meal, some see me as an object to go around or over.
And some - which are apparently smarter than we are - just go about their lives without even a nod in our direction.
>> I find the same levels in the humans I meet.
Made me smile. ;-)

Your right Greg, lots of crickets chirping here. Seems like you guys took a big left turn towards the global warming crowd ever since you reformatted your site. You used to be even handed and politically independent. Keep up the crap.
Your dropping big time in the ratings. Climategate? Oh I wonder how you guys rationalize that one!

You are indeed right. When we reformatted the site, and began using a white background, we decided to go all pinko, commie, left-wing pro-GW. Happily, last week I added a black background theme to the site - if you change over to that, you'll find that all the stories suddenly lean right-wing. The wonders of technology!
:)
Kind regards,
Greg

Are you referring to the following skeptical blog, from the UK's Telegraph, which I posted in Monday's new?
Climategate: the final nail in the coffin of 'Anthropogenic Global Warming'?
I also posted two mainstream media articles on the story, a climate scientist's views on the leak/hack, an article on the pathetic response offered by the University in question, and an article on problems with the media's coverage of climate change in general.
I thought those six links on the subject, in a single day's news briefs, pretty much covered ALL the bases.
If you think there should be more - or different - coverage of any issue here at TDG, feel free to post blogs about it, and/or add news articles about it via the Underground News Stream.

Greg, you've put about 10'000 hours into redesigning TDG right..? ;-)

The alternative is that the average visitor of TDG likes to behave here the same way that when visiting the public library: in respectful silence.
I can't say I blame them, though. Have you seen the size of the ruler Kat keeps under her desk? Damn thing must weigh a pound at the very least :-P
It's not the depth of the rabbit hole that bugs me...
It's all the rabbit SH*T you stumble over on your way down!!!

If the little buggers are sentient, does that mean I should apologise to them before I swat them?
And what about that devious, uncatchable guy that keeps avoiding extinction? Is he sitting off in a corner somewhere muttering to himself "OMG, that's 5 of the family she's murdered today?" !!
