Perhaps practicing random acts of kindness won’t seem so random…

Quadruple thanks to Rick MG, Kat, RPG and Perceval (for last week)!

Quote of the Day:

“Reality is nothing but a collective hunch…”

Jane Wagner, Lily Tomlin

  1. bodymindself
“This shows how easy it is to change the brain’s perception of the physical self,” said Ehrsson, who led the project. “By manipulating sensory impressions, it’s possible to fool the self not only out of its body but into other bodies too.”

While these kinds of experiments may help scientists to define what they mean my terms like mind and self, I think they need to be careful of their language in the mean time. Is the ‘perception of the physical self’ the same as the ‘self’, or is the ‘self’ something else? The ‘mind’?

    ——

    I don’t believe in belief!

    Perceval

  2. Happy Happy Joy Joy
I don’t agree with the fact that waiters who serve costumers with a smile get a bigger tip. There has to be a clear difference between a genuine smile, and a fake hypocritical one; the latter I can’t stand them. And they are also easy to distinguish: a true smile forms ‘crow feet’ around people’s eyes.
The one exception was co-workers, perhaps because something in the work environment prevented their happiness from spreading, the study found.
I can answer that: the work environment is all about competition. It’s the same as in school, where you can get so much envy out of the happiness of other people it can turn into hate.

I wish the study should expand to Internet social networks. I can vouch that since I became a member of TDG, I feel that my general well-being has increased. I used to have severe episodes of depression, and my view of the world was very bleak; since I began to interact in this site that has changed dramatically, to the point that now I feel more optimist about the future.

    1. So pleased, Red
What a very nice remark in your comment – you are so much a part of TDG now that it’s hard to remember it without your cheerful company and insightful posts (and hard work).

I don’t have a lot to say most of the time, and only contribute comments when I feel that what I want to say is worthwhile – this one definitely is!

      Long may you be here!

      Best regards, Kathrinn

      1. Gracias
Thanks you so much, Kathrinn 🙂

  3. Why was my “Out of Body” comment deleted?
How strange – Seems my comment had an “Out of Comment” experience! I did have a comment about “Out of mind Out of Body…” link the other day and now…its has vanished.

Well here it is again in spirit (chuckle)…
The out-of-body experience – which is surprisingly easy to induce – will help researchers to understand how the human brain constructs a sense of physical self.
Well this sort of a fly in the ointment for that whole “Out of body, Near death hoopla”.

I’m not even going to say “I told you so”…Oops! Damn, I just did. 🙂

    Cheers

I think I liked my first comment better…where ever it went.

      1. You say OBE, I say OoBE
Your comment is still alive and well – you posted it under Greg’s story “Scientists against the Tide”.
So…not so much a case of out-of-body experience, as a case of bilocation. 😉

(Ironic joke, considering how badly these stories mangle the actual definition of an out-of-body experience. Although I believe I’ve covered that before).

        Kind regards,
        Greg

You monkeys only think you’re running things

          1. not first
Actually it has happened to me a few times, that I posted a comment in the middle of a thread, and then could not find it later.

Often I just don’t remember what thread it was, and unless someone replies it is very hard to find.

Now perhaps Greg and his nefarious cohorts conspire to do this 🙂
