News Briefs 15-10-2008

Let’s skip the preamble and get straight to the news…

Thanks Greg and Kat.

Quote of the Day:

“That strange aircraft is hovering on top of me again … it is hovering and it’s not an aircraft.”

Last words of Australian pilot Fred Valentich, October 21 1978.

You totally cracked me up, Perceval! Best laugh I’ve had all day. “Stonehedge” – brilliant!

All I can say as to whether it was a hedgehog or not is that archaeologists must have tremendous imaginations – doesn’t look a bit like a hedgehog to me, but then I’m not an archaeologist I suppose.

      Regards, Kathrinn

To be honest, I can’t really tell what it is from the pictures either.

But in the imagination of a small child it could be anything.

it is when you get there.

  3. Valentich UFO disappearance
No comments on the Valentich UFO mystery? I’m disappointed in you fellow Grailers, this is one of the strongest UFO cases available to date. I’ve listened to the radio conversation between Valentich and air traffic control (this should be available online, but I’m at work and can’t search for it), and there are only two options —

    1) Valentich was making it up, to fake his own disappearance or as a joke.

    2) There really was a UFO buzzing his aircraft.

There are no other options, it boils down to these two, simply because of what Valentich described in his radio transmission. Family, friends, colleagues have all rebuked option number one. They say unequivocally that there was no reason why Valentich would fake his disappearance or make up such an encounter as a lark (and it could hardly be a joke, he disappeared and has never been seen again in the 30 years since). The late Philip Klass, UFO debunker and skeptic, accused Valentich of drug smuggling — this was totally unfounded and proven to be false. Natural phenomena, weather, the light of Venus — the usual excuses from the pseudoskeptic’s toolbox can’t be used as explanations because of Valentich’s description of the UFO clearly being a “strange aircraft”. Valentich was sincerely rattled by the UFO — if he was faking it, he’s a damn good actor.

So, there’s only one option — he really did encounter an artificial UFO when he disappeared. The question is, was it extraterrestrial or man-made? What did Valentich encounter on that fateful October day in 1978?

    1. Sorry
Sorry for not commenting, I was working too 🙂
So, there’s only one option — he really did encounter an artificial UFO when he disappeared
If may have been a UFO all right, but how do you know it was an ‘artificial’ one? The pilot thought the object was metallic —e.g. its surface was shiny— but that doesn’t necessarily mean it was made with metal. We don’t even know if UFOs are ‘made’ at all—maybe some UFOs are living beings?

By allowing us to make such assumptions, don’t we risk falling into the “nuts-&-Bolts” premises that have taken the UFO field to no promising conclusion in the past decades?

Have there been any modern attempts to locate the possible crash site with current satellite technology?

When I was young…er, I was completely convinced UFOs were advanced machines from another world. Now I’m not so sure anymore.
A strange series of photos taken out over Bass Strait, by Roy Manifold, a plumber on holidays at Crayfish Bay, near Apollo Bay, only some 20 minutes before Valentich began describing his encounter, revealed something unusual. He had taken 6 photos of the setting sun. He saw nothing untoward, with the camera set to automatically take the photo series, but upon development the fourth and sixth photos revealed apparent anomalies. The fourth photo showed what looked like a dense “black lump” in the water, giving the impression of something rising from the water. The fifth photo appeared normal. The sixth shows a strange mass situated in the sky directly over the position of the anomaly in the fourth photo, which looked like an object caught in flight with a possible exhaust or trail of material. Film faults and processing defects were ruled out. The RAAF suggested a cumulus cloud breaking up, but the timing of the exposures would have required the “cloud” to have moved into view at a speed of up to 200 mph. Now that’s some cloud for what was a calm day!
It would be nice to see those photos.
