News Briefs 03-04-2007

I predict that today is going to be a very long day — for me, at least.

A big thanks to Greg for news and wry commentary.

Quote of the Day:

During many ages there were witches. The Bible said so. The Bible commanded that they should not be allowed to live. Therefore the Church, after eight hundred years, gathered up its halters, thumb-screws, and firebrands, and set about its holy work in earnest. She worked hard at it night and day during nine centuries and imprisoned, tortured, hanged, and burned whole hordes and armies of witches, and washed the Christian world clean with their foul blood.

Then it was discovered that there was no such thing as witches, and never had been. One does not know whether to laugh or to cry…..There are no witches. The witch text remains; only the practice has changed. Hell fire is gone, but the text remains. Infant damnation is gone, but the text remains. More than two hundred death penalties are gone from the law books, but the texts that authorized them remain.

  1. SCI FI flics
I have not seen Serenity but I would have rated both Blade Runner and the first Matrix movie above Star Wars.

Not to say that I did not enjoy Star Wars either though.

It is too bad that Dune did not make it in the list while Back to the Future made it.

    1. A quote from the book Dune
Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past me I will turn to see fear’s path. Where fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
      -from the book, Dune

I agree Richard, even though Back to the Future is an entertaining movie I still liked Dune better. Love, Pam —————————–Truth is stranger than fiction.

  2. THE LOST TRAIL OF MOSES
    Very telling arcicle actually.

So, Zahi said that the biblical account of Moses was a myth, well we should at least give him credit since he specializes in modern myth making himself.
“This is a crisis for Egypt, and Egyptians do not document their crises.”
Hum. That might be a good way to avoid national post traumatic syndromes. Also this makes myth making a must.

Zahi’s job really is a very important one, its a matter of National security I guess.

    1. Torture of the natural
The church and it’s inquisition is beyond deplorable. What brain worms were installed through its dogma. The cross itself is a symbol of torture, not to be glorified. Respectfully, Dennis.

  3. Botched raid
So much spin from so many directions. Sounds like the Kurds want the US to keep more troops in the area to ward off Turkey, but that’s about the only bit that’s clear.

Humanity’s report card says, ‘Doesn’t play well with others.’

  4. Geometry on Saturn?
No doubt the enthusiasm for theories of alien constructions of the geometric whirlpools on Saturn will blindly go unabated ignoring of course the high school physics which replicate is as presented by Nature.

Anyone can replicate the geometric whirlpools with a bucket and the means to spin it – as in my 10 grade Physics class in High School.

Sites like http://www.enterprisemission.com/# and others should be required to have a disclaimer at the bottom of the page:

    “Intended for entertainment purposes only”

A couple hundred years ago any unexplained phenomenon was understood to been the work of God or some other supernatural being or force. For example not so long ago migraine headaches were the work of demons. Today this idea and many others are seen to be ridiculous.

What strikes me is hasn’t anyone seen the new age parallel in the substitution of aliens for God and demons?

    1. hey!
the general feeling here is to explore every possiblity not to lean on pre-programed thought. Just because you can replicate in a bucket does not mean it is……you can’t replicate the enviroment precicely, therefore the result is in doubt. As far as substituting aliens for gods and demons, one should understand that aliens have been around longer then any religion.
I’m surprised this site got through the chinese firewall!
