News Briefs 27-02-2007

First there was this odd report about a failed attempt to arrest him; then came an assassination attempt – by someone who knew the ‘where and when’ details of his ‘unscheduled’ visit to Afghanistan. Looks like the question of the day is, will Cheney make it back to his bunker before strike three?

Quote of the Day:

Apparently there is a great discovery or insight which our culture is deliberately designed to suppress, distort and ignore. That is that Nature is some kind of minded entity. That Nature is not simply the random flight of atoms through electromagnetic fields. Nature is not the empty, despiritualized lumpen matter that we inherit from modern physics. But it is instead a kind of intelligence, a kind of mind.

Gee Kat, your “news” postings were so rife with leftist propoganda today (much more so than usual) that I had to go visit the MoveOn and Code Pink web sites to get a little persepctive. LOL

      1. Iraq – It’s about a lot more than OIL
        Hi Richard,

Over the past couple of years, I’ve personally heard literally thousands of people – from neighbors and friends, to news anchors and politicians – all asking the same question: If it wasn’t about WMD, and it wasn’t about Hussein, what was the real reason the US invaded Iraq? Well, here’s your answer – info from the secret post-invasion plans of Our Dear Leader & Company. Of course OIL features prominently, but these secret plans are about a lot more than oil.

If you go to this page, you’ll find a link to a video (in Real Player format) of Greg Palast’s Armed Madhouse keynote speech, given June, 2006 in Portland, OR.

Palast’s one-hour speech covers 2 of the 5 chapters in his most recent book (see Amazon links below). In the first 27 minutes, Palast reports on the ‘voting irregularities’ in recent US elections. If you scroll forward to 27:12 (and allow a moment for the video to load there), Palast pauses and changes topics by saying, So… why are those soldiers in Baghdad…? From this point on, he talks about the US’s secret post-invasion plans for Iraq — one post-invasion plan of 100+ pages, and a more detailed plan of 323 pages. Palast tells who drew up these post-invasion plans, and explains the details and implications of these plans.

I can’t recommend this video highly enough – it’s terrific – but for those with lower bandwidth, here’s an mp3 of Palast’s Armed Madhouse keynote speech. This mp3 will begin loading as soon as you click this link. Since the whole thing must load before this QuickTime mp3 page pops up and begins playing, loading this 60-minute speech will take several minutes (it takes about 5 minutes even with broadband), so prepare to be patient.

US Hardback – Armed Madhouse: Who’s Afraid of Osama Wolf?, China Floats, Bush Sinks, The Scheme to Steal ’08, No Child’s Behind Left, and Other Dispatches from the Front Lines of the Class War (Amazon US).

US Paperback – Armed Madhouse: From Baghdad to New Orleans–Sordid Secrets and Strange Tales of a White House Gone Wild (Amazon US).
Oddly enough, Amazon’s cover image of this US paperback lists the title as Armed Madhouse: How the Bush Posse Stole Your Vote, Snatched Iraq, and Cashed Your Paycheck.

UK Paperback – Armed Madhouse: Who’s Afraid of Osama Wolf?, The Best Legal Whorehouse in Texas, No Child’s Behind Left and Other Tales of Class Combat in a Dying Regime (Amazon UK).

From the article Richard linked to (with my bold):

“The key point of the law is that Iraq’s immense oil wealth (115 billion barrels of proven reserves, third in the world after Saudi Arabia and Iran) will be under the iron rule of a fuzzy “Federal Oil and Gas Council” boasting “a panel of oil experts from inside and outside Iraq”. That is, nothing less than predominantly US Big Oil executives.”

Note that in June, 2006, Palast said that these secret post-invasion plans included ‘Big Oil executives’ being permanent members of Iraq’s Federal Oil and Gas Council. These plans also call for Iraqi oil production to be permanently capped at 3m barrels per day, which is half it’s current production capacity.

Regarding this article’s assertion that Iraq’s oil reserves are ‘third in the world after Saudi Arabia and Iran’ — ennttt, wrong! As you’ll find out in the video, Argentina5 times as large as Saudi Arabia’s.

  2. Possibly related to that ‘odd report’ in today’s intro?
Via a link posted at World Net Daily, I found another interesting article related to VP Cheney’s recent security problems. Since the linked article locked up my computer – twice, in the public interest, here’s an excerpt:

“Security fears led US Vice President Dick Cheney to exchange his Air Force Two suite for a high-tech trailer chained to the floor of a cavernous military plance for his visits to Pakistan and Afghanistan.”

“Travelling reporters were given strict instructions before Cheney arrived first in Pakistan: No saying he was leaving from Oman, no saying he was flying on a C-17 transport aircraft rather than his usual Boeing, no saying when he arrived, no saying in Islamabad that he would fly on to Bagram, and so on.

“The journalists were only allowed to discuss the trip with their spouse or significant other and one superior at their news organisation, on penalty of seeing the entire media squad dropped from the visit.

“Cheney had flown Sunday to Oman, a Gulf sultanate, after visiting Japan and Australia.

“Air Force Two had not left Australian airspace before an early technical glitch threatened to compromise efforts to shroud the trip in secrecy.

“What aides called a simple electrical problem — a minor inconvenience that had no noticeable impact onboard apart from the absence of hot meals, reading lights and in-flight movies — hit the news in Sydney.

“Asked about it, Australian Prime Minister John Howard said Cheney’s plane had been diverted to Singapore, forcing Cheney’s office to admit it had always been the intended refueling stop — aware it would stoke speculation the vice president was not in fact bound for Washington.

“More problems emerged when he arrived in Oman as local news reports citing Omani sources reported he was there — and the ban on travelling media revealing his location puzzled and frustrated their collegues in Washington.

“Cheney’s trip began in earnest Monday when he climbed into a 40-foot-long trailer — dubbed “the silver bullet” — that was anchored to the floor of the C-17 transport with chains and connected to power lines and communications wires.

“The cargo aircraft took off with a VIP addition, Deputy CIA Director Steve Kappes, and touched down later at Chaklala Air Base near Islamabad.

“From there, Cheney took a 10-minute helicopter flight over the sprawling city to the Anwar-e-Sadar presidential palace for talks with President Pervez Musharraf, both with top advisors and one-on-one.

“Afterwards it was back to the air base and back into the “silver bullet” for the one-hour flight to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan.

“The suicide bomber struck at around 10:00am local time the next morning in what the US military called “a direct attack.” A Taliban spokesman said that the base was targeted precisely because Cheney was there.”

In order to prevent this page from locking up my computer, I had to adjust my Security and Privacy settings to a higher level – and also had to type the excerpt, rather than copying and pasting – so if you want to take a look at the full article, you might want to adjust your settings before you click on this link.

    1. re: the above comment….
leftist, rightist…..who cares. If people have not worked out by now that they can read what they “chose”, then I feel sorry for them.
