News Briefs 22-10-2007

This fun little video might just as well be titled ‘Wake up, Kat’ — except that in my case, a mere minute and a half of this alarming treatment would be a welcome change.

Quote of the Day:

Conspiracy theorists are not kooks, they are a front line in the latest eruption of populism. In some ways, they invoke the carnivalesque, a festival which turns the political order upside-down. Unfortunately, the sobering seriousness of their research (‘When you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you.’) can lead to irascibility, over-suspicion, and isolation. A remedy for such ailments is a sense of humor. One must not only resist the encroachments of the conspiracy, ‘but learn to laugh and play, to find a point of ironic and critical distance from which a more efficacious resistance can proceed.’ Laughter will give you perspective, from which you will be able to more effectively resist. Paranoia can be fun.

Brian Redman, here.

  1. regarding birth order…
The eldest in my family is my sister. She is mega talented and smart. I admire her profusely. However, any achievement I might attain, she has to hurry her arse up to top it. Now this is rather amusing to me lol. She is 14 years older and has a list of impressive accomplishments behind her.

I see this as either flattery or an indication of her own insecurities. Anyone who needs to do better than a sibling in some area is a bit insecure dontcha think?

She works so hard to impress. I on the other hand am a bit insecure as well, though I would say for a different reason. I love doing well, but I am sometimes uncomfortable being in the spotlight. ok ok.. I am very uncomfortable being in the spotlight lol. She on the other hand would do anything to be IN the spotlight.

So if there is a birth order issue, perhaps it is this. The eldest ofttimes seek approval and ego strokes and the youngest isn’t as prone to do so. I am the youngest and I do not feel I am less intelligent etc etc etc than my siblings.

I do feel I am more original…my dear sister is oh so conventional lol

It seems you took the letters out of my keyboard 😉

My big sister (7 years older) has decided that, at almost 40, she wants to become a professional swimmer or something. Good for her I suppose, but why does she have to arrive to the family meals wearing the freaking medals she just won at the last competition??? Personally, I think this new interest… or should I say, OBSESSION? with swimming, has more to do with the young team coach than with enjoying getting up early on weekends to jump into a freezing cold pool (she’s divorced you know).

And you should have seen all the fuzz she made years ago when my mom decided to hang my college diploma HIGHER than hers. Hey, it’s not like I requested it or anything!

Besides, mine should count more because I’m THE MAN. 😉

It’s not the depth of the rabbit hole that bugs me…
It’s all the rabbit SH*T you stumble over on your way down!!!

      1. ahaahaha
        ya..

you know what I am talking about.

I think when someone is the oldest they perhaps fear the younger ones will curry more favor. After all they had to give up only status to welcome a fellow sibling.

Suddenly they aren’t top banana when a baby is born.

My eldest turned out great… then I remarried and basically had another eldest.. since they are so far apart. They do work hard at getting ahead. I grant them that!
