News Briefs 10-08-2006

Happy Birthday to our good buddy Mark James Foster!

Thanks Pam, Hoo and Kat.

Quote of the Day:

To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone capable of getting themselves made President should by no means be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem.

  1. sycronicity…………………………?
I only mentioned “hitchhikers guide to the galaxy” in a comment 2 days ago,,,and low and behold…a quote from the very same……connection and connectivity never ceases to amaze me!

Greg, your one liners are a bit FLAT in this news brief……….sorry!

  2. escaped GM grass
The last line of the article about escaped GM grass: “I don’t think people will worry about lawns and golf courses if they’ve not shown any worries already about GM food,” says Baack.

Most people in the U.S. don’t even know they’re eating GM foods, much less which of the foods they’re eating have been genetically modified, because the government will not allow these GM foods to be labeled as such.

    1. Exactly
It is the same situation in Canada.

This applies not only to the crops but also to cattle.

You just can’t know if your steak was stuffed with hormones and antibiotics. The producers don’t want any of that and won’t allow retailers to properly identify what is in there when you buy it. ‘Not good for the economy.’

On the other hand, in a world of Mc food, Mc news, Mc culture, where everything is disposable and judged on its ‘entertainment value’, it is not surprising that things are allowed to remain in that state.

In my view, the individual remains the root of the collective blindfold. So long as the thing has the right color and smell, that it is not too expensive, that’s good enough. If something happens in the future, you can always sue or have a class action. (Reminds me of the Hamburger bill passed by G. W. Bush.)

It is very symptomatic of a society drilled to wait for the shit to hit the fan before realizing that shit does exist and that shit in movement will find a fan along the way. An awaken mind would at least be more active in seeking information, not stopping after having read the headline and not being content with complacent editorial pre-digested opinions.

Don’t they say that what you don’t know does not hurt?

      1. Oh Richard!
‘It is very symptomatic of a society drilled to wait for the shit to hit the fan before realising that shit does exist and that shit in movement will find a fan along the way’

        Beautiful! Poetic even!
        Wish I’d written it.

The whole GM business has been a game from the beginning.
When they say that canola for example has to be resown each year surely they jest.
There was a case in Canada some years past where a farmer sued Monsanto because they were claiming they owned his canola crop because their seeds had escaped from their field.
        I believe they lost.
Part of the MOnsanto game has been to buy land in countries like Australia, specially Australia, and plant their GM seeds.
Then when they polinate other crops they claim ownership.

If it has been claimed now that grass seed has escaped, how many other seeds have actually escaped into the free enviroment to stuff it up.

  3. That’s a fairly humorous typo
in the item about the Da Vinci lawsuit…it certainly would be a conceit to ascribe Human weakness to the alleged Son of God, wouldn’t it?

    Cheers

    So many idiots…so little time.

  4. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK JAMES
I love your site Mark.I saw the stuff of JM Barrie who is one of my favourite people and also one of my VERY favourite people Arthur Rackham.
I have a number of books of his illustrations and I love them very much.
To me he was the one who defined many of the fairy stories I read as a child.
Alas I do not have my favourite book of illustrations by AR as a relative swiped it, but the ones I have are precious.
Once you have read a story to a child and shown them his illustrations they remain the defining factor of that story for ever.
I think I read that your father met someone who saw AR painting.
AR to me is worth more than all the Picassos and Monets in the world.
When you can paint a picture that embodies the actual spirit of the fairy world as AR did,you should be designated the world’s premier painter.

I have enjoyed your work in Sub Rosa and I will be looking forward to seeing more from you in the future.
    Well done!

  5. Warrior Maoris
What a stupid statement that Maoris in particular have a warrior gene.
I’m quite sure we all have genes that have helped us to survive to this day and age.
If our ancestors hadn’t had the warrior gene we wouldn’t be here.
That Maori chief should have lopped the scientist’s head off with a machete!
    Just joking folks, just joking!!!!!!!!
