News Briefs 10-01-2006

In a remarkable act of prescience, Bill Hicks comedy routines seem to match up well with today’s big headlines. I’ll start you off with the first few stories…

  • JFK’s assassination was a Cuban plot. Apparently some anti-Castro pigeons were seen talking in a bar, saying ‘coup, coup’…
  • Dr Albert Hofmann, discoverer of LSD, turns 100 tomorrow. Celebrations include a symposium in Switzerland this weekend. Here’s Tom with the weather.
  • Creationists claim that dinosaur fossils refute evolution. Giant flying lizards? You moron! That’s one of God’s easiest jokes!
  • Innovations from DARPA’s robot rally may make a better world…or at least better weaponry systems. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.
  • Pat Robertson says God is punishing Ariel Sharon for giving land back to the Palestinians….
  • Is the sky going to fall?
  • Hyperspace engine could make interstellar travel a reality – 11 light years in 80 days.
  • Danny Vendramini believes that there is a secondary evolutionary process which he calls teemosis. Is he a crackpot or a genius?
  • The mystery is over, apparently consciousness is simply a by-product of our physical brains. At least so says this review of Jay Ingram’s Theatre of the Mind: Raising the Curtain on Consciousness.
  • Is this movie the next What the Bleep?
  • Richard Dawkins to host television show starting this week which takes the knives to religion: The Root Of All Evil?. This reviewer isn’t as impressed. And more here.
  • New research shows that the execution of William Wallace (that’s Mel Gibson to you) was the opening attraction of a giant medieval carnival
  • Archaeological find raises questions about Jewish history: did the Jews stay behind after the destruction of the Temple in AD 70?
  • Evidence found for canals that watered ancient Peru.
  • Researchers shed new light on origins of ancient Chinese civilisation.
  • Can you communicate with deceased loved ones? Honing your psychic ability.
  • Sylvia Browne may need to have a read, after this screw-up on Coast to Coast AM about the mining tragedy.
  • A review of The Occult Tradition: From the Renaissance to the Present Day by David S Katz (Amazon UK).
  • A list of the top offbeat science stories from 2005.
  • Another list of the whackiest science stories of 2005.
  • The Top Ten astrobiology stories for 2005.
  • The top weird weather stories of 2005.
  • Global warming: 2005 lived up to previous years of record temperatures…so what’s it all about?
  • Deep-sea trawling may be pushing the coelacanth to extinction, after 400 million years.
  • Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the bookshop…5 million paperback copies of The Da Vinci Code planned for release at the same time as the movie version.
  • Speaking of which, Newsweek has an in-depth look at the movie.

Quote of the Day:

Talking about Kennedy, people come up to me: “Bill, quit talking about Kennedy, man. Let it go. It’s a long time ago – just forget about it.” And I’m like alright, then don’t bring up Jesus to me. As long as we’re talking shelf life here.

    >>Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Brilliant! Best thing you’ve ever said here. All we have to do is convince voters not to listen when the powers-that-be whine that we have to defend ourselves against… well, everybody. And they’re certain to keep that drum beat going, because there’s no rationale for top-secret food production, so it would be much harder for them to skim a few trillion off the top.

If you’re one of those voters who’s not convinced that it’s all about the money, just head on over to Newshog, where Cernig’s been posting so much evidence that they’re all lying bastards, that the poor dear is now suffering from Lying Bastard Fatigue.

And… of course William Wallace was executed at a festival! They didn’t have tv, radio, or newspapers, so how else were they going to prove to the rebellious masses that they’d really killed him?

Much as I’d like to claim it, that’s actually Bill Hicks (the concluding remarks to the awesome ‘Revelations’ concert), as per my intro to today’s news.

      Peace and Respect,

      1. Bill Hicks???
Forgive me, but the concept of taking military spending and instead giving it to the poor is much older than that.

There was, reportedly, a man named Jesus (jewish or mexican, we are not sure), and they nailed him to a cross for that. And he wasn’t the first either.

Today, we should take the money spent on silly entertainment, like bad movies, bad music, bad computer games, and do something productive with that. Improve agriculture in Africa, by putting a 60% tax on silly entertainment, and subsidise the farmers there. I’ll pay.

          Hi Earthling,

I wasn’t referring to the concept, I was referring to the actual quote. Don’t really want to be seen as plagiarising.

          Peace and Respect,

      Hi,

Sorry Kat, i’m not impressed, the statement is too obviously selfevident. No government will freely do away with its hold over the people they’re supposed to serve- but rarely do. Forget about govs or their militairy enforcers to stand aside.

Want to change the world ? Start by ending the inheritance concept.

” do unto others as you would have them do unto you “

Not sure if I’m missing something in your reply, as the whole article is about Browne making a mistake. It leads off with “Controversial TV psychic Sylvia Browne made a major mistake about the West Virginia miners tragedy on a Tuesday night radio show.” It then details that Browne said “”No. I knew they were going to be found. ” after incorrect news said that all but one had been rescued. A corrected bulletin then said that all but one had died.

      Peace and Respect

  2. Poor Pat Robertson
I am starting to believe that he is not the full quid.Does anyone take any notice of what he says lately?

Is Richard Dawkins preaching to the converted?
    Yup.
If you believe in God then there is a God.
If you are like me and do not believe in a God, then there is no God.
I think though that Dawkins is being quite arrogant wanting to preach to people about what they should or should not believe.
    That is proselytising after all.

I read in the paper on the weekend that Dan Brown is troubled with writer’s block.Maybe his wife left him.
I also read that Ron Howard was approved by the Catholic Church to do The Da Vinci Code because he does not polarise issues.
Apparently he is going to put up a disclaimer before the movie saying it is all fiction.
Even OPus Dei are happy with what he is doing.
In that case I don’t want to see it.

It’s good to have some new news. Thanks Greg.

    1. RE: Pat Robertson – You Mean Dangerous Pat Robertson!
      Shadows

Pat Robertson is one of the most cunning and influential people that you will ever come across; but, he’s not very bright! He doesn’t see the hand writing on the wall! He’s hanging himself with his own propaganda, like the rest of the christian right wing with their propaganda! The problem is that he’s going to take a lot down with him when he goes down along with the rest of the christian right wing! The man is dangerous in my opinion! But, so is the rest of the Christian Right Wing!

      What do you think?

      1. Christian Right
The Christian Right is not going to go down. When Alito is confirmed to the Supreme Court, the Christian Right is going to become even bolder. Intelligent Design and prayer are going to be forced into public schools, abortion will be abolished, and any number of loony right-wing pet projects will be shoved down the throats of the American public. Welcome to the new United States of Christopia.

        1. You Overlook Two Things In My Opinion!
          Lee

I understand your point and it is a good point. But, there are two factors working against the christian right wing that will come back to haunt them before too much longer in my opinion!

1} Their vaulted prediction of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ that they base on Judeo-Christian Scripture (The Bible) has not and will not come true! This will discredit them far more than they can possibly imagine!

2} They are making too many enemies and the infighting between them will intensify in direct proportion to the power that they gain! This combination will prove to be deadly to their movement!

          What do you think?

          1. Christian Right
            1) I disagree. The non-appearance of Jesus has not stopped them yet, and no matter how long Jesus takes, they can still claim that his reappearance is just around the corner.

            2) I partly agree. It is generally true that when a party gains tremendous power, in-fighting breaks out. However, no matter how foolish and corrupt they appear, and no matter how much criticism they get, they will simply ignore it. They always ignore it. Criminals and fools will always make excuses for their behaviour.
