Quote of the Day:

See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.

President Bush, talking about Social Security in N.Y.

  1. Forget Crazy Frog
My good buddy Blair has the answer to the Crazy Frog plague, in his latest update over at toolband.com:

“I did overhear members of the band discussing this very thing with regards to one of their new songs – in fact, the 18-minute-long song – and I believe it was Maynard who wanted it to be made available to purchase/download as a polyphonic ringtone, with the only stipulation being that the song WASN’T edited in length…”

  2. Cernig’s Appalled
Hi Katch, and thanks for the link.

It looks very like everyone except the American theocrats are appalled by the judge who basically said “I know nothing about your religion but I think it’s anti-Christian so you can’t teach it to your son”. Even the secular far right has spoken out. The decision is almost certain to be squashed on appeal as breaking the Constitution as much as five times.

My problem is with how such a travesty could happen in the first place. I mean, don’t judges have to know about the Constitution?

I will also admit that I have a strong reaction to such intolerant bigotry no matter how minor it may look to another. Perhaps I should explain some background on why.

Let me tell you a story. Way back years ago, I and a whole crew of pagan friends from three different Scottish cities rented a house with a lot of land out in the boonies so we could all celebrate a Wiccan festival together. Nothing weird going on – a bit of drinking, some jamming by musicians and a sedate ritual where everyone kept thir clothes on. Unbeknown to us, one of the guests was a reporter for the tabloid The Sun (actually, for their sunday version, the News of The World).

The next sunday, pics of various of us, taken through a telephoto, along with this clown’s very slanted version of the weekend appeared on the 5th and 6th pages of the rag under the headline “Satan’s Granny’s Coven is a Cauldron of Sin”. He had also gotten quotes along the lines of “Wicca is just Satanism” from some people to go along with the report and justify the headline.

Some idea of how lurid this rag made it sound will be given by the line “a heavily pregnant woman held the book of rituals.” The implication of the next paragraph was that of baby-eating or maybe paedophilia. Well, my now ex-wife gave birth just fine, in a modern hospital, and my daughter is now a happy and healthy 9 year old.

And the “Wiccans are Satanist” quotes? It turned out that he had asked other members of the Sun’s staff to comment, then printed those quotes without mentioning that they were from staff. Oops, what an accident but not technically a lie as they really had said those things and therefore no legal action was possible.

Two people lost their jobs over that article. I almost did, and left the firm I was with shortly afterwards in any case as I no longer trusted them to support me. Others experienced investigations by child protection authorities (not us, other guests with families) or were persecuted in their own communities – including one of the nicest and wisest septugenarians I have ever known, the “granny” in question. She passed away a couple of years later, still not quite over the ordeal.

So…that’s why I have a kneejerk reaction to this kind of stuff, and why I truly pray that the reporter, his editor and their eventual boss Rupert Murdoch rot for eternity in the Christian hell.

You see, I know that bigotry wrecks real people’s lives.

    Regards, C

    1. the so-called Media
There is a good reason why there is a judicial system in the USA (derived largely from the English system), and in most of the western world: the realization that There is no system to correct for failure of the “media”, as they call themselves, except civil courts. Individuals should not be immune from responsibility for their speech just because it gets printed in a newspaper, and individuals should not be limited in their right to free speech because they don’t write for one.

  3. Heavy lift rockets
Trying to get to space by finding a ticket on packages of concentrated sugar water is risky, you might be too heavy. Fuel requirements quickly grow with the weight of the payload. Better go on a healthy diet, and be prepared to blow $100,000 on a 1/2 day trip in 10 years. If it’s not your only $100K it may be worth it.

  4. Devolution: Why intelligent design is bad science.

i gess it was a “title-article” or i was too lazy to follow it

    anyways

  5. “Catapult the Propaganda”
“See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”
President Bush, talking about Social Security in N.Y.

So there we have it. George’s boast that he is ‘catapulting the propaganda’. This is where the American people are so naive. Nothing must be very serious to Americans. If anything is not obviously good, then it must either be a joke, or else it must just not be important. Jesus said: For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” I think GWB committed what is called a ‘Freudian slip’ in the quote above. In other words, he said what he was really thinking. He is catapulting the propaganda. What does this say? Propaganda is an overt form of psychological manipulation. The word ‘catapult’ invokes the idea of siege warfare. Hence – psychological assault warfare. This is actually what GWB and the Neo-cons are continually engaged in against the American public. The program is to conquer and subject through psychological means. Think about it. Can you imagine George Washington ever bragging about “catapulting propaganda” against the American public. “Oh, but he was just joking. It didn’t mean anything.”

    2. Don’t be so quick to point fi
Don’t be so quick to point fingers at a propaganda machine just because it’s propaganda you don’t agree with. Liberals are just as much if not more guilty of propaganda as your hated “Neo-Con” propgaganda.

The real interesting thing about propaganda is it’s only usually labeled propaganda when you don’t like it.
