Return of the Triffids
Posted by Greg at 13:28, 28 Nov 2008Mmmmm, the BBC is going to remake The Day of the Triffids. John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic novel featuring nasty plant critters is one of my favourite books ever, so I'll be looking forward to this (don't screw it up Beeb!). In HD no less.

I'm more concerned about the (very timely) remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves and the wonder-child of Will Smith. Considering how robotic Reeves's acting can be (Bill & Ted excepted), he may have been better cast as Gort rather than Klaatu.
And there are rumours of a Forbidden Planet remake. That's all Hollywood does these days, remake foreign films, and remake their own. I'd hate to be a director or screenwriter with an original idea.
Anyone remember the BBC series of The Tripods? Loved that when I was a kid.

1000 thanks! I reread Day of the Triffids earlier this year, and it brought back to me memories of another cool post-apocalyptic story I read when I was a kid which had 'War of the World-like' tripod machines controlling humanity...but I couldn't remember the name of it (duh, 'The Tripods'?!). Just took a look on Wikipedia, and as soon as I read this...
"Humans are controlled from the age of 14 by cranial implants called "caps", which suppress curiosity and creativity and leave the recipient placid and docile, incapable of dissent."
...It all came flooding back to me! I can see the fake cap in my head right now, dredged up from my imaginative memory after 25 years.
But in answer to your question - no, I never did see the TV series. I may have to do a little investigating, and see what I can find. Thanks Rick!

I read about it a while ago. As many british sci-fi programs, it compensated its lack of budget for special effects with intelligent script-writing.
Maybe it's in the BBC archives, and can be viewed on the net for free.
As for Rick's heresy (insulting THE ONE), the only thing I can reply to ammend his sin, is that maybe the intention of the director was to protray Klatuu as artificial & synthetic as the original Gort. From what I've seen from he trailer, it kind of implies that the explanation of why Klatuu shares our exact same biology is that his body is a 'borrowed' one.
Yeah, I'm still hopeful! ;-)

The Tripods Trilogy. I read it as a kid but had no idea the BBC had serialised it.
I had to google 'shmand-fair' to check I wasn't thinking of something else - it's all I could remember! Oh, it's slowly coming back now - domes, green gas...

Clicking this link should bring back some memories. With today's CGI, might be worth a remake. 'Caps' would suit today's Big Brother UK climate of ID cards and DNA database. I can still remember the scene that had one character cut a cap from his armpit using a knife.
Me, I'm watching the Mysterious Cities of Gold. Just as good as I remember it too!
