Sub Rosa Magazine

I’m proud to announce a new facet to TDG today: Sub Rosa magazine. Sub Rosa is a complete magazine in PDF form, available as a free download from the Sub Rosa website. Check it out, and let us know what you think.

In this first issue, our cover story is on Robert Schoch, where he discusses the age of the Sphinx controversy, the Yonaguni ‘monument’, and our old friend Dr Zahi Hawass. We also have a profile on Terence McKenna, Stuart Hameroff’s quantum consciousness, Donnie Darko, columns from notables and much more besides. The PDF layout has allowed us to utilise beautiful graphic layouts, and even insert videos – so it’s a complete experience. Hope you enjoy it.

  1. Sub Rosa
What an excellent job. Very cleanly and impressively designed.

Might I be so bold as to suggest just one minor tweak in that area?

I think the spreads might benefit, graphically, if you had both a left and a right page header. By that I mean, for example, that on your left-hand “Columns” page you leave the header as currently shown — but on the right-hand page you “flop” it, putting the word “Columns” on the outside. It would give more balance to the spread, and if it was in fact a printed magazine the reader could find a section by simply fanning the upper-right corner.

    All Best, and Congratulations!

    Jeff

  2. Sub Rosa magazine
Conrats on the first issue of Sub Rosa. It was a great read and very stimulating, as well. I will be looking forward to the next issue! Thanks!

  3. Doubtful Salmon
    Great mag, guys!

Interesting that Greg commented on DNA’s anthology “Salmon of Doubt”. I just finished it and was a bit disappointed by Adams’ comment about flight recorders in saying that titanium aircraft would be too heavy to fly. He obviously did not know about the SR-71 Blackbird made entirely of Ti!

BTW, the old bird leaked like a sieve until heat from air friction caused the Ti to expand and close the gaps.

  4. Sub Rosa – Design
    Hi Greg,

Just reading your mag now on screen in pdf… Good job but being a designer i thought i might offer you some advice (Hopefully you won’t be offended), I think you should reconsider the typeface you have chosen for the body text as the serifs are spindly and the the face is quite difficult to read on-screen, consider choosing a slightly more robust sans serif. Also another little bug-bear but justified text really does cause legibility issues, basically the justification causes rivers of white between the words and causes the eye to be interupted and often follow these rivers. This is why i very rarely deviate from aligned left text for articles etc.

I don’t really mean to be negative… but i really want to continue to read Sub-Rosa as and when it’s released… but my eye are hurtin already and i’m only on page 18…

    Paul Humphreys

P.S. Love TDG, keep up the good work.

    1. Go with your Gut Greg…
I am a graphic designer also and 50 years of such work indicates to me that one should go with what brung them. No offense Paul. Let the man run.

      O.

    2. Suggestions
      Hi Paul,

Thanks for your comments. Good thoughts on the typeface, we might play around a little with some sans serif fonts and see how it looks. On the other hand, I dislike reading left-aligned text, and really enjoy formatting our articles in justified text – so I will probably stick with that (apologies!).

      Peace and Respect
      Greg

      1. Fonts
        Hi Paul,

Just wanted to come back on your points about the typography in the mag.

I think Greg has answered the question of why we used Justified text.

As for the choice of font, after much experimenting I picked a font with a very large X-height that would be easier to read on-screen and which would appear larger and clearer than other fonts set at the same point size. I don’t think it looks spindly at all personally!

Furthermore, the beauty of the PDF format over viewing web pages is that you can make the text as big as you like in a PDF very easily. For Windows users simply hit [Ctrl & +] to increase the page size, to reduce it hit [Ctrl & -]. To force Acrobat to fit the page to your screen size hit [Ctrl & 0]. (For Mac users it is the same keys subsitituting [Ctrl] for [Cmd].)

So, with a PDF there is no reason to ever let yourself get eyestrain and if you are experiencing problems then you have it too small!

        Thanks for your feedback.
        Mark

        1. 2 sides again
The world does not just consists of Windows and Macs, you know.

I’m seeing some problems rendering things with kpdf and xpdf, but the Adobe reader looks good, once you have it.

The adobe download for rpms is broken, you have to use the tar.gz version. And of course you have to agree to their EULA 3 or 4 times, don’t forget to invite your lawyer over for the weekend.

          1. 2 Sides and Shortcuts…
I am aware that there are more Operating Systems than just those that comprise the Windows and Mac families – however, I always figure that anyone astute enough to run with Linux or another esoteric OS is sharp enough to have worked out their own shortcuts! 😉

        2. Fonts, etc. — a plea for help
          Hi Mark,

I hope you can help with an issue that’s been a nuisance to me for some time now. Since I spend a lot of time at TDG, I have my monitor’s brightness set quite high. As a result, when visiting sites with a very light background accompanied by a light font, I have to adjust my brightness downward to 50% or lower, but that also reduces the contrast between the background and the text even more. And of course, on returning to TDG, I have to readjust the settings again. Is there something I’m missing here, i.e. an easier way to address this problem?

          Thanks,
          Kat

          1. Brightness
            Hi Kat,

What type of monitor do you have? Are you using Windows? Also, have you installed a new graphics card since you got the machine?

That does sound very odd. Generally you should just be able to find a setting that works for all sites. It is really hard to judge from here as it could be a lot of things, but it sounds to me like your colour settings need calibrating, or your graphics card is not working well with your stystem and monitor. But it could be something else entirely, even that your monitor is on the blink!

Have you tried using the white theme for TDG. I actually use that as I find the white background easier on the eye after reading a lot of text. Maybe that will help in the meantime..

Let me know what you have and I’ll see what else I can do. Perhaps email me rather than bothering the board here with endless technical specifications!

My email is info(at)artifice-design.co.uk (you just have to add your own @ sign in place of the ‘at’…)

This is Hairball, archdake’s orbit-potential cat. Obviously the lack of an opposable thumb was no match for my superior intelligence.

I like the mag, I’m reading it behind archdake’s back, niarrr.

P.S: If anyone spots Shadows’ parrot contributing here please let me know.

    1. well he beat Hairball to it
There is a post from Captain in the thread on conspiracy. He went alone by helicopter to get information I desperately needed.
AND he left his book to do it.You know what it’s like when you are reading Proust, you have to keep on with it.

Next week I will try and coax him onto Under Milkwood, but I get the feeling he does not like the Welsh.
It’s only because he won’t eat leeks.

Oh well he may enjoy Ulysses. I know I did and he has my genes.

What a great online mag. you guys have put together! And it’s FREE! Downloading it on my dial-up took about 30mins but it was worth it. I have had a quick scan through and am impressed at the interesting articles you have managed to include. I do like the name you have chosen and the artwork is wonderful. I’m sure it’s a goer.Hope you are getting the next one together soon. Go guys. That’s my boy!

  7. Greg is indeed the Man…
You are doing great and I wish you all the luck needed to keep it going. I wish it were in print so I could just carry it around. I guess I could print it out. I have some good graphics if you ever want to use any, just send me an e-mail. I love magazine work even though I am getting a little long in the tooth and the posterior. Keep up the great work Greg!

    1. Print
      Hi Ron,

Thanks for the comments – if the PDF is popular enough, we may eventually do a limited print run for those who want a paper version (I know I certainly prefer reading off paper). We would have to be sure of recouping our expense though before we committed to doing this.

Also, a thanks to all who have sent feedback or commented here – seems like everyone is very positive about it, which gives us great incentive to get cracking on the next issue (which will be considerably bigger now that we are rolling).

      Peace and Respect

  8. Sub Rosa
    Gregg and team;

Wonderful job. Good look and “feel” to the mag. I see a great future for Sub Rosa. As a long time member of TDG I will look forward to each issue. I love the live links to the web content. Keep up the excellent work.

    1. Ahahah
      Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the link, appreciate it.

The name: well there’s a book in that question…we had a lot of names to choose from, Sub Rosa was the only one that wasn’t already a magazine already (as far as I know). Seriously, pick a word, and it is the title of a magazine, journal or newsletter.

But Sub Rosa just popped into my head one day without any conscious thought, and it was liked from the get-go. The main issue was whether others could relate to it, with it being a little ‘esoteric’.

      1. Perfect Name…
It goes to the deepness of intellectual discovery…SUB. Rosa goes to the substance of the subject matter and its vast and gestalt coverage. The name is unique and will sustain Greg when he is old as many of us currently are. Would that I had that youth once more to drive me through my crazy mentality to realize what Greg is bringing to the front.

      2. Sub Rosa
        Hi Greg.

Not all that esoteric. My copy of “Da Vinci Code” has been consigned to a box in either the attic or the basement, so I can’t check on what I am about to say. But I think the term got a fair bit of ink in the book, and so the title may have already insinuated itself in the minds of more readers than you know.

Let’s hope that Ron Howard makes a little hay out of it in the movie!

        Best!

        Jeff

  9. Sub Rosa Magazine
Greg I love the idea of the Magazine; but, I have space problems on my computer. Is there any way that I can read it on this site or send it to my web e-mail. I have a small lap top computer, not a desk top computer. It’s full of software including Acrobatic Reader. The software takes up so much space that I use web e-mail boxes.

    1. Downloading
      Hi Kennc

You basically have two choices – view the PDF online in your browser or download it first and then view it in Acrobat.

Both methods take up the same amount of disk space, viewing in a browser will take up 6MB of your internet cache and downloading it will take up 6MB of your Hard Drive space – there is no difference at all. So, personally, I would download it everytime because then there is no delay between turning pages!

If you don’t have 6MB of HD space then that is a very crammed drive indeed. If you are REALLY pushed or space then you could always delete the PDF when you have read it – I could not possibly recomend that having designed it, but I’d understand. 😉

If you already have Acrobat then you are most of the way there. All you need is 6MB of extra space for the PDF itself.

      Any problems let me know.
      Mark

      1. Sub Thoughts on Rosa….it is good
        Hey,

I was thinking that the things we do today from the heart usually turn out in the future to be a great gift for humanity. Writing and publishing and all, well it is just good thing to do. Like an alternative library that will be accesible in the future.

Remember the movie Forbidden Planet or even Superman? The sacred and unknown knowledge was archived on disks and in crystals. I love books, and I love the computer. Magazines and books (good and true ones which are expressing consciousness and revealing the hidden truths) are so good. I keep everything for some reason as I never know when I will need it to reference back to.

As it was pointed out, it costs vey much money to hard copy. Unless there are many supporters willing to pay for subscriptions it is somewhat difficult to do.

At first when I went to the link, all I was able to do was download and open it up. I could not save it? I do not know if it is my browser settings or MS WINDOWS….I know….Micro Soft….oooohhhh….I do not like the monopoly….and there are many problems with XP as well.

A friend sent me a link, I was able to go to the link and then download and save it to my computer? I have it saved in a file now, and it is most convenient that way. Also you are able to archive it and it is part of history. I just click to it and blammy it is there.

What I like about Rosa is the visuals. It is lovely to see the artwork and yes, the faces behind the thoughts. I was surprised to see Greg, and yes there was Ian and others..but…I think visuals are very important. There is that old saying a picture tells a thousand words. I believe this to be true.

Rosa is different then other mags the way it is laid out. There was a lot of thought, heart and time put into it. It feels good. Not may mags on the internet feel good. I know you can’t hold it and feel it, that is not what I am talking about. I am talking about the essence and the behind the scenes effort that went into creating it.

The various articles when placed together create a larger picture of consciousness and reveals the person’s who are creating it and their inner desires to share what they feel is important to realize and be aware of.

Sub Rosa is an entity itself now created by the contributions of many. Magazines that are created from pure sweat, trial and error are usually the ones that last in the human psyche forever as they are real and full of soul. They are able to reach down and touch our inner being and find that spot within us that is willing to learn and grow.

I hope Rosa continues and any stumbling blocks you may come upon you are able to hurdle over and get on with it. Good luck to all who have made it a reality.

        Thanks, it is good.

  10. Fantastic Job
    Hi Greg (and Mark)

You wrote to me personally but I thought it only right to express my support for what you and Mark have achieved with Sub Rosa publicly on your own forum. It looks superb and the content is terrific for a first issue. I think people will be attracted to the mixture of, for example, alternative history and modern consciousness research. And I too was intrigued to finally see what you look like 😉

Keep it up, I will support you in any way I can (although probably the best way would be not to write for you any more 😉

    All best, Ian

    1. Hi Ian
Don’t be so self-deprecating, you write well and you’re always able to stir up a bit of debate! Your words are a more than worthy addition to our little magazine. Thanks for taking part in it.

  11. Whither, Sub Rosa?
Great read, perfect for me to print out and read on the commute to and from the office! I hope it keeps going, I seem to remember a CD-ROM magazine a year or two back that I got onto via TDG, (can’t recall its name, nor am I sure how involved in it Greg was…) but as I understand it that stopped after 1 or maybe 2 issues (I purchased the first only.) I’m hoping that maintaining this strictly on-line format there are fewer production cost issues to deal with and so more chance of a longer run for Sub Rosa. Keep up the good toil!

    1. Duat
      Hi,

The CD-Mag was called DUAT – it basically went on hold when we all got signed up for Phenomena magazine. After parting ways with them, the plan was for us to continue on with DUAT – but unfortunately (well, not really!) Simon, the editor, sold a truckload of books (Cracking the Da Vinci Code) and got caught up in that whirlwind.

In the interim, I got itchy feet and so put together Sub Rosa – with the help of Duat graphic designer Mark James Foster. The good news is that DUAT is back on track, so now y’all end up with two resources, Sub Rosa and DUAT. The latter is far more oriented toward video, and I think this time will be released on DVD to make it more accessible. You can find out more at the DUAT website.

  12. A couple of comments
I understand that the interview with Mr Schoch may have predated your review of his latest book but I think it would be interesting if some of the issues you raise in the book review where addressed to him in that or in a complementary interview.

    1. Agreed
      Hi Archdake,

I agree. The reason for this is one of timing – the magazine was originally scheduled to come out in March, but a few things came up which meant a reschedule. I got a review copy of Pyramid Quest just two days before we released the magazine, so read it and reviewed it and put it in there literally hours before release.

I add my praises to the long list. Thank you for creating this aesthetically and intellectually appealing offering. Now, how will you top the first issue? I especially enjoyed the Stuart Hameroff article. Thanks.
