From ‘Paradigm Shift’ to ‘Paradigm? Shiiiii…’

Further proof 2015 has been a year that sucked donkey balls*, the organizers of Paradigm Symposium, the event which I’ve religiously attended to for the last 3 years, has been postponed and moved to either May or June of 2016. To say this is a personal disappointment for me is an understatement the size of the freaking Death Star…

2015 began with promise for the Paradigm Symposium; however, we have experienced numerous setbacks throughout the year, while still operating under full confidence that the Symposium would successfully come off as planned. It was only in the last week that we reached the final decision that moving the date and location had now become a necessity.

Over the last few months, we have experienced setbacks and budget cuts from nearly all of our sources sponsorship, along with having experienced issues coordinating our needs with the hotel venue. Again, it was while moving forward within these last weeks that it became clear that the Symposium would need to be rescheduled.

On Thursday of last week, that final decision to reorganize and move things to a future date became finalized. We felt it much more prudent and wise to make this necessary change.

Scotty Roberts and John Ward, the main organizer of Paradigm, assure attendees that all tickets purchased in 2015 will be honored for next year. That of course will be of little comfort for those who, like me, ended up with non-refundable plane tickets…

It’s also still uncertain whether the current lineup of speakers will be maintained either –I was just listening to Richard Dolan’s radio show on KGRA a few minutes ago, and currently he does not know whether his schedule will permit him to speak at the symposium as it was intended.

Will Paradigm be able to overcome this HUGE blow? I sure hope so. I cannot deny how incredibly rewarding and nourishing attending this eclectic event has been for me; it’s not just a question of hanging out with my buds, but being around like-minded people in a rich environment where ideas can be explored, and personal high-strangeness experiences shared, without the usual fear of ridicule.

Regardless of the situations and/or decisions which led to this kerfuffle, Paradigm deserves to endure.

(*) Please God, *PLEASE* don’t let 2015’s bad juju jinx Episode VII, too!!

      1. sorry about your loss RPJ
but history shows every single one of them fades the way of the dodo sooner or later. I appreciate your love for the event and the need to meet your buddies AND the need for such a symposium in the first place, but para stuff isn’t mainstream. And as such will never receive enough attention to survive in the long term. Everything is a business model, either you have a product for big bucks and small crowds, or you have a cheaper product for massive crowds. Can’t have a small crowd on a good but cheap product, doesn’t work economically. Raise prices, loose clients, lower prices, marginally few more clients less revenues. So, F’ed if you do, F’ed if you don’t. Although I love the concept, no way I’ll fly there from Europe where I’m based or Asia where I live at the moment. Heck, no way I’d fly from anywhere given the costs of travel in North-America even if the event tickets and hotel were free

        1. Jim Moseley
I’m aware of how Jim Moseley used to organize a very big and popular UFO conference, and lost money every single time –and this in the days when UFO popularity was at an all-time high! He only kept doing it because he could afford to (he had inherited money from his parents).

So who knows what will happen. If Paradigm does end up bellying up, I will still cherish the moments I experienced on this event… and move on 😉

  1. El Neenyo Grande
    Holy ParaDollar, Batman!

Did you contact the airline to see what they could do? Sometimes they will work with you even on a non-refundable ticket. Maybe they can reroute you to LA so you can get started on S3 collaboration? Hopefully there’s a silver (screen) lining on this 2015 cloud cluster f*#K.

    1. plane ticket
RPJ, why not just go anyway and make a day of it or whatever. Go to LA and have fun. You never know you may never get to use it. Sorry I know that hurts to say but you are in a boat with many others who got their hopes of for Para (too lazy to try to spell that properly) and are now on a one way trip with Charon to Hades. Scoot over this ferry is chaffing my thighs!

      1. Made my decision.
I talked to both the assistance office of Delta and Expedia. Basically cancelling or modifying the ticket brought the same US$200 penalty. So, bye bye tickets…

I thought about going anyway, but right now it doesn’t make any sort of financial sense to me. As much as it hurts losing the airline fare, that is debt out of my back, since I had consciously paid for them months in advance. Going to Minneapolis still implies spending money on the trip –hotel, meals, taxis, etc– and to be honest, right now I’d rather use that money in other things, like surviving down here in Mexico until a find a new job.

So bottomline, going to Paradigm this year was already a pretty reckless decision on my part, but it was still worth it in my mind because I’d get to see my friends. But now… forget about it.

Next year? Well, let’s see what the hell happens.

        1. find a new job
Hey man, we are in the same boat! I wish so much I could go to these festivals and events (had to miss one in Maryland this year) but I can never get a ride or afford the trip. I got laid off last Christmas Eve – not even kidding – when the company I worked for went out of business. All the jobs I could apply for are a three hour drive for me. I can’t move because of family I take care of. Shit man. We stuck 😛
