Witness to Roswell

Roswell once again has hit the news (even making it on to Slashdot!), not least because it’s the 60th anniversary of the ‘event’, but also because of a new revelation discussed in the book Witness to Roswell (Amazon US and UK). The late Army Lt. Walter Haut, former Roswell AAF Base Public Relations Officer – in fact, the man responsible for the original ‘captured flying saucer’ press release – signed an affidavit before his death last year, swearing that the Roswell incident did indeed involve an extraterrestrial craft:

(12)…I was permitted from a safe distance to first observe the object just recovered north of town. It was approx. 12 to 15 feet in length, not quite as wide, about 6 feet high, and more of an egg shape. Lighting was poor, but its surface did appear metallic. No windows, portholes, wings, tail section, or landing gear were visible.

(13) Also from a distance, I was able to see a couple of bodies under a canvas tarpaulin. Only the heads extended beyond the covering, and I was not able to make out any features. The heads did appear larger than normal and the contour of the canvas suggested the size of a 10 year old child. At a later date in Blanchard’s office, he would extend his arm about 4 feet above the floor to indicate the height….

(19) I am convinced that what I personally observed was some type of craft and its crew from outer space.

Despite the calls of some ufologists that this is the ‘smoking gun’ of Roswell, I don’t see this making too much impact on the argument (although it’s great PR for the public perception). Haut’s memory of the Roswell incident is beyond fickle – he has on different occasions said that he actually didn’t see anything, that the UFO claims are “just a bunch of hooey”, and has even sworn a previous affidavit saying that Marcel was the one who saw the debris. While it’s possible he was saying otherwise to protect himself (eg. if under oath of secrecy), it still leaves his final affidavit (not a death-bed confession, as many are reporting) ringing rather hollow.

Interest obviously remains high in the Roswell case though, with Witness to Roswell almost breaking through into the Amazon Top 100 at the moment.

There’s one major inconsistency in Haut’s affidavit. He claims debris from the crashed craft was scattered so far, the military and locals were collecting bits and pieces for months afterwards. However, the egg-shaped craft he saw in the hangar was intact and undamaged. Haut is quite clear that this was the ETV recovered from the crash site, and it is not a second ETV.

    I want to believe.

If he really knew something, he should have given more information that was usable to help prove it was true, or something. Clues and hints and names and info and timelines, etc., that could be looked up, followed, investigated, something, resulting in something real and tangible. Was he setting up someone’s book as income for his children or wife or something like that as a type of “life insurance scheme”? (like, imo, E. Howard Hunt)

That’s how the whole Roswell thing gets as time goes by.

I mean no disrespect to Haut’s memory, but let’s not forget that in the last years of his life he PROFITTED from the Roswell myth with the museum he cofounded along with Glenn Dennis. So he was not totally unbiased in this issue.

Also, he now says the craft had the shape of an egg. I mean, gee! Does anybody know how many shapes has this object been claimed to have?? The last time I checked, it was said to have the shape of a shoe heel… The problem with Roswell is that it seems none of the claims (and that’s pretty much all we have) seem to coincide with one another.

And yet, I do feel something unusual happened in New Mexico. Certainly something more unusual than a weather balloon. I wish I knew what.

something did happen out of the ordinary. I’m not sure what it was. I do remember reading, in the early seventies, a magazine that was about cover ups and area 51 and Roswell. It stuck in my mind. The artical mentioned the debris field and the size of it, also that there was a capsule, possibly an ascape module, in an oval shape. It was damaged but there were bodies inside. One was still alive.
Now over the years I have brushed aside many Roswell stuff but have always taken mental note. The artical I remember was written in 1972. It was fairly comprehensive and mentioned many things that have come out way latter. It was written by someone who was on the spot and witnessed all that took place with the concealment of the capsule and the body’s and the living one. I can’t remember his name or what he used as a name. But it was very precise and acurate in detail.

But I am still uncertain to what may or may not have happened. The mis-information has been very good for so long now. Mind you, in the early days the information was a little more acurate. Mis-information never got into full gear untill the interest and technology increased.
